This week’s Carbon School District weekly update shines light on Carbon High School. Assistant Principal, Steven Pay took some time from his busy schedule to discuss what is new at the high school.
The first thing many students and parents will notice right off the bat is the new parking lot area. “The parking lot is all paved and ready to go and that’s going to be a big plus for students. We’ve separated it out where the busses go, visitor parking and that’s all in a parking lot by itself and the rest of it is all student parking. So where the old bus garage was that’s now a parking lot,” stated Pay. The school was in desperate need of additional parking over the years so it’s nice that it was included in the new constriction plans.
“The biggest new construction was where the old quad was what was outside and it’s brand new. It’s got an office and library and a bunch of broadcast rooms and about four or five classrooms right there in the new area that we’ve added on to the school,” said Pay. The rest of the school also got a facelift with fresh paint and a few cosmetic changes were made so that it matched the new construction concept.
There is still some construction going on in the Fine Arts Department and it should be finished up in a month or so. “Originally there wasn’t going to be any construction done there but we were able to work it in to the budget and so we started late with that part because it was an add on. So currently all the Fine Arts rooms are blocked off. We have the Fine Arts teachers out in the trailers behind the school. But by the end of the first quarter which is about the mid part of October those rooms will all be done,” stated Pay. This portion of construction will also include a new stage in the auditorium and a black box theatre.
With all the new construction a few additional minutes have been added between classes so that students are able to find their class rooms. “We knew they were going to have a problem going to a room, or finding a new room because all of the rooms have be re-numbered, the halls have all be re-named after National Parks and so we added an extra minute in the class pass time so they have five minutes between classes and we figured they’ll need that time to get used to it, till they can get it in their brain where they are going,” stated Pay. The school plans to host a public open house at a later time and those details will be shared at a later date.
