The local farmers market has been going strong in Price, and this year they have added the convenience of being able to use SNAP benefits. SNAP benefits used to be referred to as food stamps. Steven Price with the USU Extension Office stopped by to let us know about this service.
“You can use those SNAP benefits, so if you have a Horizon EBT card, you can come in and buy things like eggs or dairy products or fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, all sorts of different stuff.”
Price also spoke about the variety of items available as well.
“Tomatoes are coming on, we should be seeing some corn crop here soon. Of course we have a lot of salad crops. Cucumbers this year are going wild, so if you’re into cucumbers that is a great way to get a hold of those. We’ve got people with eggplants, more types of peppers than I have ever seen there. So quite a variety.”
Price then took time to explain the added bonus of using SNAP benefits, the “Double -up Program”.
“The other cool thing about being able to use SNAP benefits is, for every dollar in SNAP that you spend at the Farmer’s Market, you can use the “Double-up Food Bucks” program, which means for every dollar you spend in SNAP, you get a free dollar in fresh fruits and vegetables.”
The Farmer’s Market runs Saturdays from 9:00 to noon in the parking lot by the fire station. It will run till the first frost in October.
Also the Extension is putting on a cattle clinic in Green River at the John Wesley Powell Museum on September 23. They will be discussing the cross breeding work that is being done by Utah State and how it can benefit the overall genetics in their herds.
