Helper Middle School is being highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update and Castle Country Radio was able to speak with Principal Robert Bradley about how the school’s construction project is coming along.
“For right now we are in the building as it stood and as it has been used. We started the school with a couple of rooms being remodeled, four of them in fact, plus the counseling office and a couple of restrooms. Now two of those we were able to occupy and somewhat in a complete state, there’s still some work that needs to be done on those. Two on the bottom level were not finished and we ended up having to teach band in the lunchroom and one of our classes in are Home Ec. Kitchen,” stated Principal Bradley. Since construction is going on students and staff have stayed clear from those areas as they are being worked on and school administration appreciates that very much.
The gymnasium is currently one of the areas that is being worked on at this time. “Same thing is currently happening with the gym it’s still finishing up a remodel, we are waiting for some lights. So it’s got lights, sprinkler system, new paint job, eventually, we anticipate to have the floor refinished but that probably won’t happen for another year or so. But in a couple of weeks, we will be occupying the rest of the structure and the new construction that’s in back can continue on its own and hopefully come Springtime we’ll be able to occupy that,” said Principal Bradley. The construction process has been moving along in a timely manner and the administration hopes to be able to occupy the new portion of the building sometime in the Spring of next year. Once the new portion of the building is completed, they can begin demolishing the front portion of the school.
“We were able to take the staff on the brief tour to show them some things. We can now access the second floor that’s being built in the back, so they were able to see some of the classrooms that they will be occupying, and they are thrilled. There’s a lot more space, there’s a lot more openness. The lunchroom has an incredible concrete bleacher stair that is bring created, it’s called the learning stair. In that lunch room it, all looks north towards Balance Rock so you have some incredible views that are being captured,” explained Principal Bradley. Once the construction is completed school officials will host an Open House for the public to come to visit the school.
