The Utah High School Activities Association released the initial RPI rankings for volleyball on Saturday and both Carbon and Emery find themselves in the top five. Carbon entered the poll  No.2 at 11-1 and Emery No. 4 at 14-0.

Layton Christian holds the top spot followed by Carbon. Morgan, Emery and South Summit round out the top five.

Carbon has played a very diverse schedule this season with wins over teams in every classification from 2A to 5A and the only loss on the schedule came at the hands of the defending 3A champs Union.

Starting in the No. 2 spot, Carbon could be looking at a great opportunity for themselves, if they just keep winning.

Up next is a meeting with the Richfield Wildcats on Tuesday at home. And then another home match with North Sanpete on Thursday.

The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:

*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.

*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.

*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
