After playing one of the most challenging non-region schedules in 2A, the Emery Spartans are ranked No. 5 in the initial Utah High School Activity Association’s RPI.

Gathering a record of 2-3 during the non-region portion of the schedule, the Spartans have played four 3A teams ranked inside the top 8. The other game was against an out of state opponent in Democracy Prep.

Being ranked No. 5 puts Emery in position to potentially climb inside the top four, which comes with a first round bye for the state tournament. The Spartans will see two of the four teams ranked above them in region play, beginning this Friday with South Summit.

Undefeated Beaver is currently in control of the classification’s top spot after starting the season 5-0. With wins over in state Grantsville, Summit Academy, Kanab and Providence Hall, the Beavers have played the top schedule in 2A.

South Summit is ranked No. 2 in the first rankings, also starting the season 5-0. San Juan and Summit Academy complete the top four.

The initial rankings show an even balance between the two divisions in the classification. Five teams from each of the divisions make up the top 10. Grand and Judge Memorial are the final two schools coming in at No. 11 and 12 respectively.

The playoff format for 2021 will give each of the top four teams a bye in the opening round. Teams ranked five through 12 will make up the opening round on Oct. 22.
