The Carbon Dinos completed the 2021 high school golf season with a 7th place finish overall at the 3A State Championship meet Thursday afternoon at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course in Tooele.
Competing against 15 qualifying schools throughout the classification, the Dinos ended with a two day total of 654, placing them 20 strokes out of a top-five performance. The Morgan Trojans claimed the 3A State Championship with a team score of 602, defeating second place Grantsville by nine strokes. Richfield, Juab and Union rounded out the top five.
Carbon easily qualified for the second and final day as the team shot a combined 317 in the first of two rounds Wednesday afternoon. Tied for fourth entering Thursday, the Dinos dropped two spots with a round of 320, falling below both Union and Richfield.
Junior Bode Salas put together two solid rounds of golf as he finished second overall in the individual standings with a 144. Morgan senior Tanner Telford took home first place with an outstanding 136 two day total. Salas, who entered the finale as the defending 3A State Champion, topped Telford by four-strokes in 2020.
Salas ended the two-day tournament with 10 total birdies. Only Telford recorded more as he gathered 12 birdies and one eagle. Salas also went nine consecutive holes between the first and second day without recording a bogey.
Sophomore Kyler Clark gave Carbon its second low score of the tournament as he finished with a 167, placing him in a tie for 31st overall. Firing an 81 on Wednesday, Clark rounded out the season with an 86 on Thursday.
Senior Brandon Scovill was third on the team with a 170 two day total as he claimed sole possession of 39th. Junior Daron Garner gave the team its fourth score with a 174 as he tied for 46th overall. Rydge Butler and Cole Yoklavich ended with a 182 and 185 respectively. Butler’s second day score of 90 counted as one of the top four scores for the team in the final day.
Carbon completed the 2021 regular season last week with a second place finish in Region 12. Salas clinched the Region 12 individual championship for the second consecutive season. The top two finish in the region standings automatically qualified Carbon for the 3A State Championship.
Stay tuned to Castle Country Radio as next week head coach Robbie Etzel will join KOAL’s Drive Time Sports to recap the state tournament and the 2021 season.
