
The Emery Spartan golf team finished the year in eighth place at the 3A State Championships. Led this season by seniors Trevin Wakefield and Kavery Killpack, the Spartans finished in fifth place at the Region 12 tournament and were solid throughout region play all season.
Next season there will be plenty of underclassmen from this year that will be ready to lead the charge, with names like Leonard, Larsen and Toomer ready to take up the mantle of Spartan golf.
Listed below is a recap of the matches played this season.
August 4- Cedar Ridge- Third Place
The Emery Spartans opened the high school golf season with a third-place finish in the first Region 12 meet of the season Wednesday afternoon in Cedar City at Cedar Ridge.
Trevin Wakefield shot a team low 83 as the Spartans finished with a 356 overall. Wakefield’s individual performance was enough for him to land a spot inside the top 10 leaderboard.
The Richfield Wildcats took home first place as they combined for a 324. Carbon ended just behind in second with a 329. Emery managed to top the home squad Canyon View, who finished fourth with a 372, followed by Grand in last.
Kavery Killpack was second on the team for Emery as he shot an 86. The final two scores went to Joey Leonard and Kade Larsen who shot a 93 and 94. Carter Huntington, Tayten Reid, Logan Riley and Alex Hansen all participated, but did not have final scores count towards the team’s total.
With the first meet now in the books the Spartans will shift their focus to Tuesday’s trip to Quirrh Hills, the site of this year’s state championship on Oct. 6 and 7.
August 10 Oquirrh Hills- Third Place
Coming off a third place finish in the opening match of the season last week at Cedar Ridge, the Emery Spartans hit the road again this week traveling to Oquirrh Hills Golf Course in Tooele, the site for this years State Championship. With all region squads in attendance the Spartans shot a combined 363 placing them in the third spot for the day.
Richfield once again claimed the top spot, shooting a 320. Carbon finished in second with a 330 then Emery, Canyon View and Grand rounded out the field.
Joey Leonard was the top golfer for Emery shooting an 84 with Kavery Killpack right behind at 85. Kyle Larsen and Dempsey Toomer both finished with 97 and Carter Huntington shot a 99.
The top overall golfer was Grand’s Wyatt Toney who shot an even par 72. Carbon’s Daron Garner put up a 75 while Richfield’s Pace Mullen carded a 76 and Carbon’s Bode Salas ended with a 77.
The season will pick up again next week on Monday when they will take to the Moab Golf Course. The home of the Grand Red Devils.
August 16- Moab Golf Course- Fourth Place
The Spartan golf team found themselves on the road on Monday for the third match of the season at the Moab Golf Course, home of the Grand County Red Devils. Trevin Wakefield’s 84 led the Spartans to a fourth place finish with a combined score of 358.
Richfield would once again claim the top spot with a 320. Carbon finished second with 327, then Grand turned in a 355 with Emery and Canyon View finishing out the field.
Wakefield turned in the low score for the Spartans. Kade Larsen finished just behind him with 89. Joey Leonard carded a 92 and the trio of Kavery Killpack, Carter Huntington and Dempsey Toomer all shot a 93.
Richfield sits atop the Region 12 leader board with a 12 stroke lead over second place Carbon. Emery holds the third position and a 30 stroke lead over Grand with Canyon View sitting in fifth.
Up next is a match at Cove View home course to the Richfield Wildcats on Aug. 25.
August 25- Cove View- Third Place
The Emery Spartans were on the road Wednesday at the Cove View course in Richfield, the home of the Wildcats. Emery has turned in some solid performances, and this one wouldn’t be any different, landing in third place with a 346.
Richfield snagged the top spot with a 304, Carbon was in second turning in a 336. Emery grabbed third with Canyon View and Grand rounding out the remainder of the field.
Individually for the Spartans Kavery Killpack posted an 80 with Carter Huntington turning in an 87. Joey Leonard put up an 89 and Trevin Wakefield, 90. Kade Larsen posted a 93 and Dempsey Toomer a 95.
The results of this match will not count into the season total since there will be another match at Cove View later in the season. It was a great practice round on a course that they will see again.
Up next is a course they may be more familiar with, the Carbon Country Club Course, home of the Dinos. The match will take place on September 2 and will begin at 10:30 a.m..
September 2- Carbon Country Club- Third Place
Trevin Wakefield shot a 77 and Kade Larsen an 85 as the Emery Spartan golf team traveled to the Carbon Country Club, the home course of the Carbon Dinos on Thurday. Putting together a combined score of 339 the Spartans comfortably sit in third place in the Region 12 standings 56 strokes ahead of fourth place Canyon View.
Richfield would once again take the top spot turning in a 306, seven strokes better than second place Carbon. Canyon View posted a 352 and Grand County 370 taking fourth and fifth place respectively.
Behind Wakefield and Larsen, Carter Huntington shot an 88 while Kavery Killpack and Alex Hansen both carded 89.
With only four meets till the State Championships in October, the Spartans focus will turn to next week when they will host the region at the Green River course. This will be a change of venue from the normal host course of Millsite. With the Green River course being just nine holes, each hole will be utilized twice.
The meet at Green River will be Thursday and is scheduled to begin at 11:00.
September 9- Green River Golf Course- Third Place
Trevin Wakefield tied for second individually as the Emery Spartans gathered a third place finish Thursday afternoon at the Green River Course in a Region 12 competition.
A week after shooting the lowest team score in three years, the Spartans delivered a solid 342. Richfield continued to expand its lead at the top of the standings with a 312, followed by Carbon at 321. Canyon View rounded out the field of four.
Wakefield finished tied with Richfield’s Keaton Anderson and Canyon View’s Jack Vickers for second individually with a 77. Carbon’s Bode Salas edged the competition with a meet low 76.
Kavery Killpack was second on the Spartans with an 83. Joey Leonard was the team’s third score at 90 and the fourth went to Kade Larsen’s 92.
Thursday’s meet was originally scheduled to take place at Millsite in Ferron. Due to course conditions the meet was moved to Green River, which is a nine hole course. Each of the four teams played twice through to gather the final scores.
Only three meets remain in the season before the 3A State Championship on October 6 and 7. The region season will continue on Thursday, Sept. 16 at Palisades.
September 22- Cove View- Third Place
Trevin Wakefield shot a 76 putting Emery in third place on Wednesday at the last stop of the regular season schedule at Cove View, home course of the Richfield Wildcats. Emery solidified their third place spot in the final match before the Region 12 Championship.
Wakefield was followed by fellow Spartans Carter Huntington with an 82, Joey Leonard’s 86 and Dempsey Toomer and his 87. Kavery Kilpack put up a 90, Kade Larsen 93, Mason Crawford a 99 and Turner Stoker a 105.
Wakefield’s 76 was enough to put him in the top five for individual performances. Richfield’s Keaton Anderson put up a 71 to take the top spot. Bode Salas of Carbon turned in a 73, Grand’s Wyatt Toney a 74 and Jaygen Mullen of Richfield finished the day with a 75.
In the team ranks it was Richfield who claimed the top spot with a 302. Carbon placed second with a 312. Emery turned in a 331 for third. Grand and Canyon View finished the top 5.
The match at Palisade last week was scored as an exhibition and did not count toward the final regular season totals. Richfield ended in the top spot followed by Carbon , Emery and Canyon View.
On Monday the Region 12 Championship will take place at Palisade in Sterling. The State Championship will be on October 6 at Oquirrh Hills.
September 27- Palisades- Region 12 Championships- Fifth Place
The Emery Spartans wrapped up the golf regular season with a fifth place finish at the Region 12 finale Monday afternoon at Palisade Golf Course.
Trevin Wakefield shot a team low 83 as the Spartans locked up third place in the division overall. Kavery Killpack was second on the team with an 88. Joey Leonard and Carter Huntington rounded out the top four with a 91 and 94 respectively.
Despite the fifth place finish at the finale, the Spartans have done enough throughout the year to keep a hold of third place in the standings.
The Richfield Wildcats finished off an unbeaten season with a 327, just topping second place Carbon’s 331. Grand finished in third with a 347, followed by Canyon View’s 352. Emery was four back at 356.
Emery will now await the final averages to see if the season will continue at the 3A State Championship Tournament, which is scheduled to take place on October 6 and 7 at Oquirrh Hills in Tooele.
October 6-7- Oquirrh Hills- 3A State Championships- Eighth Place
Emery Spartan golf finished up the 2021 campaign at the 3A State Championships on Thursday at the Oquirrh Hills Golf Course in Tooele. At the end of the two day meet Emery finished the season in 8th place out of over 15 schools that qualified for the post season.
The Spartans two day total of 689 put them two strokes ahead of ninth place Grand and 16 strokes ahead of the tenth place finisher Canyon View. Morgan took the top spot turning in a 602 followed by Grantsville, Richfield, who was the top finishing team from Region 12 then Juab and Union rounded out the top five.
Emery ended day one just making the cut in tenth place with a 345 on Wednesday. Thursday they would leapfrog both Grand and Canyon View turning in a 344 to move up two spots.
Senior Trevin Wakefield turned in a 165 over two days, putting up an 82 on day one and an 83 on day two, which put him in a tie for 27th place. Senior Tanner Telford of Morgan, turned in the low round both days, shooting a 136 and claiming the title of the top 3A golfer, beating defending champion junior Bode Salas of Carbon by eight strokes.
Sophomore Joey Leonard turned in Emery’s second lowest two day total a 172. His day one total of an 84 and final round 88 combined was enough to put him in a tie for 42nd.
Senior Kavery Killpack finished third for Emery with a two day total of 177 putting him in a tie for 53rd. Carter Huntington, a junior, ended in 60th with a 183, shooting a 102 in round one and then came back and shot an 81 the next day which was the lowest round for Emery of the tournament. And then two freshmen Kade Larsen and Dempsey Toomer finished the meet, shooting a 186 and a 194 respectively.
The Spartans finished the regular season in third place in Region 12, and had to wait to see if they would be eligible for the state competition. This was a step in the right direction for an Emery team that missed the cut at last year’s championships at the Round Valley Golf Club in Morgan.
