Helper’s First Friday Celebration will take place on Friday, November 5 at 6:00 pm on Helper’s Historic Main Street and this month’s theme is Day of the Dead. There will be many fun activities and events for the entire family to enjoy. Event Sponsor, Kenny Driggs took time to stop by Castle Country Radio to discuss all the details.
“First Friday is to let people know, is a long running event in Helper and this week the theme is Day of the Dead like you mentioned, and if you’ve seen the movie Coco, Day of the Dead is a pretty special tradition, and if you spent any time down in Mexico or any of the Latin countries that celebrate it. It’s sacred, it’s special, and it’s really beautiful,” explained Driggs. Driggs is the owner and operator of West Coast Show Support which is the proud sponsor of this month’s First Friday event.
There will be poetry reading done at the Rio Theatre starting at 7:00 pm. “They call that Calvaeritas. Now the Calvaeritas are like poems of death and honor. There somewhat sinical, they can be comical, they can be loved based, but they are about usually tributes to people or things that have passed on, sometimes they are more abstract,” said Driggs. The live poetry readings will be done by members of the community in remembrance of their loved ones who have passed.
Then at 8:00 pm there will be a concert held at the Rio Theatre with the group The Damn Liars. “We’re going to have The Damn Liars they’re coming through, they’re out on tour right now, a band out of Northern California and they are great fun. Western, Rock n’ Roll, seriously talented musicians. It’s a great show. So that show is $10.00, we’ll open the doors at 8:00 pm. We’re going to have an opening act, Scott and Kendra, local sensation from Helper,” stated Driggs. Both bands are sure to play something that is appealing to everyone during the concert event.
There will be the usual children’s activities, food, art galleries opened to visit along Helper’s Historic Main Street. Organizers hope to see everyone from the community attend this family fun event. To learn more about Helper First Fridays visit their Facebook page.
