Red was born in Grandpa Len’s two-room log house in Randolph, Utah to Lucile Jackson and Stirl Dean Hess on June 6, 1942. He passed away in his beloved Ferron, Utah on November 6, 2021. He was 79.
His younger years were spent in Randolph, Utah, Evanston, Wyoming, Provo, Utah and Fielding, Utah, ending up in the US Army at the age of 17.5.
After three years of military service, Red went to work through the construction division of the Teamsters Union 222, spending 34 years building roads, dams, bridges, power plants and the TOCDF Plant at Tooele to destroy chemical weapons.
In 1995, work through the Teamsters dried up and Red went to work for Johansen & Tuttle Engineering. This ended up being 20 years of good work for a great bunch of people! He really enjoyed the guys and all he learned with them. Thanks to all of you!
On August 26, 1966 Red married his best friend and love of his life Janet (Jan) Keim in Springville, Utah. They made their final home in Ferron where they raised two outstanding sons, Kelly S. and Jerald T.
Red enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed camping and hunting, and later in life preferred to be the “camp jack” at deer camp sittin ‘round the campfire pickin guitar, reciting cowboy poetry and making delicious Dutch oven meals. He loved boating the friendship cruise and Lake Powell with his family and friends, 4-wheeler rides out on the desert with short rides and long stops. He had a passion for guns and military equipment. In his words, “he was a Jack of all trades but a master of none,” but anyone that knew Red knows he was a master of plenty. He was a work-hard play-hard type of guy! He spent 20 years in the Emery County Sheriff’s Posse and serving two years as captain. With the guidance of Layne Potter, he initiated the high angle rope rescue program.
He was a 40-plus-year member of the American Legion, serving 20-plus years as Adjutant of Ferron Post #42.
Red is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Jan, of 55 good years of marriage; two sons, Kelly (Lori) of Spring, Texas, Jerry (Kandi) of Rock Springs, Wyoming; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gayl Hess, Garland, Utah, Ferron (Butch) Lee Brough, Springville, Utah; sister, Marla Jane Brough.
Preceded in death by grandparents; parents; and one sister, Norma Lou Brough.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people that have lent a hand throughout Red’s battle, the folks at Symbii, and a special thank you to Sandy Jensen and Mandie Bennett.
