The Carbon County Food Bank is a wonderful organization within the Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments that offers help to individuals/families that are in need in Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties. Food Bank Coordinator, Kade Lyons took time to talk with Castle Country Radio about their services.
As most people in the area are gearing up for the upcoming holiday dinners there are many residents in the area that don’t have that luxury and look to the local food bank for help. “Yea, we’re doing alright on some of the things, the main things we’re looking for really are seasonal donations, being that of turkeys, hams, we could also use cranberry sauce, stuffing, stuff of that nature,” stated Lyons. Seasonal items include what folks would need for a traditional Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.
Because of the COVID pandemic, there are some items that are limited so the local food bank is really hoping that the community will help this year with what they need to stock their shelves for the holidays. “In previous years we’ve been able to order stuff when we don’t have the donations coming in for our turkeys and hams, stuff like that. But this year we have limitations on what we can order so we are really relying on donations from the community to help support our families in need,” said Lyons. It’s not known how many turkeys or hams will be needed but as we all know there are many families in our area that are having a hard time this year.
Other items that the food bank is in need of is condiments and shelf-stable milk. “One thing that I think would be really nice is shelf-stable milk. Quite often we will get milk as a donation but it doesn’t last very long. Either it expires or we just give out so quickly. But shelf-stable milk would be very beneficial,” said Lyons. The food bank is always in need of canned goods, these are easy to hand out and easy for folks to use at home. Another item that is needed is pop-top canned goods, as the food bank assists some homeless individuals that may not have a can opener available.
Food or other donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm or by calling the food bank at (435) 637-9232 to schedule an appointment. Donations can be dropped off at 75 East 400 South in Price. If you are unable to donate items to the food bank you can make a monetary donation towards the cause.
