The Carbon Lady Dinos basketball team got down to business Tuesday night when they welcomed the American Leadership Academy Eagles to Price. Carbon put on a defensive display holding the Eagles to single digit scoring in every quarter and taking the 61-27 win.
Under new head coach Cami Carlson the Dinos will look to turn up their defensive intensity by implementing more of a full court game. Carlson was on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports recently to explain.
“Mostly defense that will fuel our offense. We’re hoping to be a full court team the whole game and then really push all the time to keep the other team on their toes. And then our offense will be a little more spread out than our girls are used to but, we have some seriously athletic girls that we want to utilize their strengths and so we hope to do that, we’re getting better at it each day that we work on it, so I’m optimistic about it.”
The new defensive philosophy was working in game one after holding the Eagles to just four points and holding them to 9-of-29 shooting throughout the contest. Carbon carried that momentum into the second half taking a 32-13 lead into the locker room. The Dinos continued to pour it on in the third and fourth quarters outscoring the Eagles 29-14.
Sophomore Madi Orth led all scorers with 13 points and grabbing six rebounds. Senior Sydney Orth tossed in 12, shooting 3-for-3 and 2-of-5 from three point land, she also collected six rebounds. Senior Stevie Oman added eight and Janzie Jensen, another senior handed out five assists in the win.
The Dinos won’t have another home game until 2022 when they will welcome Union to Price, but that doesn’t mean that they wont be busy.
They will be on the floor again Tuesday at Grantsville and then will head into three tournaments back-to- back-to-back with the Shannon Johnson Classic at Uintah then a tournament in Fruita, Colorado the second weekend of December and will wrap up the Tournament season the weekend before Christmas break in Richfield at the 2A and 3A preview tournament.
At the 2A and 3A Preview they will see teams like Juan Diego and Morgan. Juan Diego made it to the 4A Quarterfinals last year in the State Championship Tournament and Morgan is the defending 3A State Champion.
