The Carbon Dinos hit the floor running on Wednesday night in Price as they welcomed the Delta Rabbits to open the 2021-2022 season. Losing the majority of their starting line-up from last year due to graduation, Carbon didn’t show it as underclassmen from last season who are now seniors stepped up and came away with the 70-47 victory.

Joining KOAL’s Drive Time Sports, Coach Jared Butler talked about losing so many seniors on varsity from last season and moving forward with the talent that Carbon has this year.

“We did lose the majority of our varsity team but, we do have two or three that were able to get quite a bit of varsity time even though we did have a large group of seniors last year. And then through our summer is where I’ve really been able to see. A couple of them had baseball that had to miss some of our camps but, when we had our team I was really excited.”

In the first half, Carbon turned up the heat on the defensive side allowing just eight points from the Rabbits, taking a 30 point lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Dinos were actually outscored 39-32, but had built such a big lead that Delta couldn’t over come it.

Senior Rylan Hart lead all scorers with 27 points, he also grabbed seven rebounds and six steals.

Senior Jackson Griffeth dropped in 16 with 10 rebounds and four assists and senior Jordan Fossat added eight while dishing out seven assists.

The Dinos have three more home games coming up before they will head out on the road the first weekend in December for the 3A preview in Richfield. They won’t see their first region action until the new year when they will face Canyon View at home on January 14. Butler admits he does know a lot about the newest member of the region the Canyon View Falcons.

” I don’t know much about Canyon View yet, but we’ll be able to see that as the season goes. Grand if they don’t bring the two “bigs” back, I’m thinking they won’t be as good obviously as they were last year, but they have some kids on that JV squad that were really gritty like ours were. Emery is going to be really solid and Richfield is going to bring back a couple of really big kids, and I think that’s going to be one of our challenges with a couple of these teams in our league is their size, but we’ll have to figure something out to work through that.”

Up next for Carbon is match-up with Union Friday night in the Dinos gym in Price.

Game time is set for 7 p.m..
