A corner three with :16 seconds left from Ashton Ferguson gave the Dinos the lead and the win against the Union Cougars on Friday night at the Carbon High Gym. Coming off a win in the home opener against Delta, Carbon looked to keep that momentum going against Union. In a game that was every bit as close as the final score 51-48.

Last season these two teams met up in December with the Dinos taking a 64-52 win in Roosevelt. This time around the venue changed as did the personnel. Carbon lost six seniors to graduation last May, but so far the seniors this year have stepped up for some big minutes.

Union is coming off a 2020-21 campaign that had them losing in the second round of the 3A State tournament to Grand. The Cougars are the polar opposite to Carbon, losing just two seniors to from last year’s squad.

This contest was close from the beginning with both teams tied at the end of the first quarter and at halftime.

The Dinos would actually lose ground in the third falling back 38-32 at the end of the quarter. Looking to bounce back the Dinos would outscore the cougars 19-10 in the fourth with no points bigger than Ferguson’s three. The Dinos would increase their defensive pressure causing Union to throw the ball out of bounds and Carbon took the three point victory.

Jordan Fossat made some noise for the Dinos scoring 20 points, dishing out four assists and gathering one steal. Rylan Hart added 14, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Jackson Griffeth put in seven while grabbing eight boards and coming up with two blocks.

The Dinos will back at home on Tuesday night when they welcome the Providence Hall Patriots.

Providence Hall Lost to South Summit last season in the opening round of the State Playoffs last season and are off to a 1-0 start this year with a win over St. Joseph’s last Friday night.

The game with the Patriots will be available on KRPX 95.3 The Peak as well as streaming on castlecountryradio.com. The Landon’s Diesel Pre-game Show will begin at 6:30 and the tip-off will follow at 7.
