Carbon Caring for Kids is preparing for a long school holiday with the Christmas Break coming up and they are in need of donations. Coordinator, Marcie Loveless took time to come into Castle Country Radio to talk about the “Meal Kits” needed for the holiday break.
“Covid has kind of changed how we do the Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Spring Break weeks. Before we would have them buy the food, then we would separate them all, and then we would have someone come pack all the kits. Now we do it differently where someone sponsors one child. They buy all the food except for the perishables which we add at the end, they buy all the food, and they pack the kits in their home with their family, and then they drop them off to my home,” said Loveless. This concept allows for them to know how many children will have a Meal Kits for the long holiday.
The items that are needed in the meal kits are so that children can easily prepare them by themselves. “So for the Christmas pack we have five Chef Boyardee, they are the microwavable ones, the ones that go right into the microwave. We have tuna fish and crackers snack boxes, fruit cups, apple sauce cups, lots of different snacks, a peanut butter and jelly, non-breakable jelly, and we throw in a loaf of bread and we give them a bunch of fresh fruit as well,” explained Loveless. The cost for a Meal Kit generally runs around $25.00 to $30.00. To date 81 Meal Kits have been spoken for leaving 53 meal kits that are unaccounted for at this time.
There is a deadline when the Meal Kits have to be turned in so that the organizers can make sure they have all the kits accounted for each child they are assisting during the break. “Wednesday, December 8, if we can get them all to our house so that we can just make sure we have enough, we’re not scrambling for the next week for when we are packing them and we’ll have plenty of time to get them,” said Loveless. The Meal Kits need to be dropped off at the Loveless residence on 1551 West Cedar Drive in Price.
