The Spartan wrestling club made the trip to Millard last weekend to take on some of the best competition in the state. With the wrestlers keeping up a grueling pace, having five matches on Friday and four more on Saturday the Spartans had a tremendous showing.
Emery’s team this year consists of quite a few freshman and sophomores and Coach Kirk Christiansen, was a guest on Drive Time Sports recently and talked about finding the best competition for his wrestlers.
“They really came in and wrestled the highest level of competition I could find them. Our goal was to come in and make as good a showing as we could.”
Monty Christiansen at 106 pounds wrestled to a perfect 9-0 over the weekend.
In the 132 weight class, Byron Christiansen ended the weekend with a 7-2 record just falling short in his match against the No. 2 wrestler in the state Blake Woolsey from Morgan High.
“It was no surprise that it was a good match, Byron ended up losing the match by one point. Great wrestling match, I think there’s the preview of the State finals match for sure”, Christiansen said.
Tyler Stilson and Maddex Christman both posted 7-2 records for the weekend in the 165 pound and 190 pound classes.
Coach Christiansen is pretty excited when you ask him how he feels about where the team is this year.
“We’re right on the money, we really are. These young kids that are in my varsity holes right now got some big shoes to fill, but I think they’re up to the task. And we’re going to have a ball, this is going to be a great wrestling season, I hope it’s another record setting season for the Emery squad.”
Tuesday the Spartans will travel to Monroe to face South Sevier and then over the weekend it will be another tournament, the Juab Winter Classic.
