The Carbon School District took time to shine a spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary this week and Castle Country Radio was able to visit with three third grade teachers to talk about Penny Wars, Acts of Kindness Month, and Grade Level Challenge.
“Recently for two weeks in November we did a challenge called Penny Wars. The Penny Wars was for each penny or for each dollar that was brought in, it counted towards points for our archery program, we’re part of the National Archery and Schools Program. Our Archery Coach which is Sheila Manzanares told our principal that now in March when the kids go to the competition, they’re going to be charged $15.00 a head fee. To take the sting out of that, our PTA President decided to spearhead this and did a fundraiser and it was the Penny Wars,” stated Mrs. Terrie Cox. The goal was to raise $1,900.00 to help with the expenses that Archery Program was facing and the students were able to raise $1,993.40. Mrs. Gardner’s class won for the most money collected but had silver pieces which deducted points. Mrs. Cox class won with points and received a root beer float party.
Acts of Kindness Month is a third-grade tradition during the month of December. There is a tree shaped display near the classes that have different acts of kindness to choose from to perform for the day as a class. “Some of the things that we’ve done are tell a friend something nice, clean your area at lunch, tell the lunch ladies thank you. Yesterday was our Specials Day where the kids go to different areas of the school and we had them sing a song to the Specials Teachers and they loved it. They had a great time doing it. But everyday we do something different,” stated Mrs. Caroline Barrington. The students look forward to this tradition every year and are excited to get to school to see what the next act of kindness will be for the day.
“Over at Sally Mauro, students earn tokens for turning in things like reading calendars, passing off math facts, leveling up in reading, having on task behavior or great work in their math or reading groups, and doing well in their Specials Classes, which are like P.E., library, computers, art and music. So anyway, third grade has won the token challenge the last two months, so we’re very proud of that,” said Mrs. Katie Gurule. The entire third grade class was rewarded by allowing them to play a game of twister with the School Counselor and they also earned a treat too.
