Wellington Elementary is plugging along gearing up for the upcoming Christmas Break. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Principal Paulie Vogrinec to talk about what her students are doing to prepare for the long holiday break.

There is a group of students that are members of the school’s choir group that have been busily working on Christmas songs to perform. They recently were able to perform for the local nursing homes in the area. “Our music teacher, Mrs. Wendy Grant, she’s amazing. She works really hard with our fourth and fifth grade students. All year they do after-school choir and then she works with all of the kids during the week, during their specials program. So she took a select group which she calls her Musical Majors out and they went and visited the nursing homes, Good Life Home, they went out to the Senior Center. So it was pretty exciting they didn’t get to do that last year so it was really nice,” said Principal Vogrinec. The group will be performing their songs again at the school on Thursday for their parents.

The school will be awarding Warrior Awards which is citizenship awards before the students leave on Christmas break. “Every month we concentrate on certain skill. Mrs Bailey our School Counselor goes around and to the classrooms, she’s in there once a week. She does different lessons and so this month our theme was gratitude and being thankful for the things that we have and showing people gratitude. So we like to recognize students who go above and beyond in that skill and they’re recognized, every month we have a different theme so this month we’re working on gratitude,” said Principal Vogrinec.

Students recently finished up their mid-year testing just in time so they can enjoy their time off for the long Christmas break. “We use to wait till January to do our testing but the last couple of years we’ve done it in December because it’s a short month there’s a lot of things going on. So we try to get all our testing done in those three weeks in December so that once January starts our teachers are ready to dive back into instruction,” explained Principal Vogrinec. School officials were very pleased with the testing process this month and were happy to see all the students complete their mid-year testing.
