The USU Extension of Carbon and Emery County are excited to be hosting a series entitled Castle Country Gardens and Landscapes for Beginners. Extension Assistant Professor, Steven Price and Assistant Professor, Rowe Zwahlen both stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss all the details of the course.

“It doesn’t matter if you ever planted a vegetable. These classes are meant to be a good introduction to that and yea, our Master Gardner Course we do get a little bit more in the weeds, as it were, but this is really geared towards those that just want to learn more and I think even if you’ve done gardening for a bit, hopefully there’s something you’ll walk away with too,” stated Price. This course will help give you basic gardening skills that are related to our area’s soil and climate.

The courses that are being offered are:

January 12             Vegetable gardening fundamentals

February 16            Turfgrass basics for the best lawn on the block

March 16                Native plants & pollinator friendly landscape

April 13                  Get off the ground: Raised bed & container gardens

May 4                    Introduction to the flower garden

This series will be held in room 122 in the Reeves Building on the campus of USU Eastern from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. “It’s just going to be very low-key; we’re doing it in the evenings for about an hour. You know it’s for beginners, or for anybody that has any interest in these topics, I really think they will enjoy it,” said Zwahlen. The course is open to all ages and the cost for the classes is $5.00 a class or $20.00 for the entire series.
