Guy was born in a box car in Bingham Canyon, Utah, to Rethal Tull and Guy F. Ernst. Guy’s parents later divorced and his mother remarried Robert Koss. His family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, and then to Sunnyside, Utah. Guy was raised in Sunnyside and graduated from East Carbon High School in 1961. Not long after graduation he joined the Navy and served four years on a flight carrier in the Vietnam War. After his tour with the Navy, he remained in California where he met the first love of his life Janet Jones. Guy and Janet married and remained in California until 1975. In 1975, they moved back to Utah and he got a job at Kaiser Steel. They bought a home in East Carbon where he lived until his passing. His sons, Tim and Ernie graduated from East Carbon High and moved to start their own lives.
Guy worked at Kaiser until 1994 when the mine closed down. After the mine closed, he went to trucking and heavy equipment college. He also worked other jobs in the mines in Colorado. Guy was hired at East Carbon City Maintenance Department, where he later became supervisor of the maintenance department until he retired.
Guy was very involved in the community. He was an umpire for the little league for many years and he was a board member for Sunnyside Credit Union for many years. Guy and his first wife, Janet, spent an extreme amount of time exploring the desert in the area. Guy loved to read old western books. He enjoyed camping with family and friends. He liked to watch little league games on T.V., college football, and his favorite NFL team the Raiders. Guy liked to do paint by number pictures; they are beautiful. He also was on the bowling leagues at Sunny Bowl for many years. When he was in high school, he worked at the bowling alley setting pins after school at night.
Guy was given the nick name Corkie by his grandmother as a kid. The nick name stuck and defined him because he was always a jokester and loved to tease his friends and family. Most people in the community only knew him as Corkie and did not know his real name was Guy.
Corkie was an exceptional man and had many friends. He would help anyone that needed help. If you were a friend of Corkie you were a friend for life. Many of his friends were from his work at East Carbon City; Mick James, Jared, Cody Valdez and more.
Corkie was an animal lover. He loved dogs and cats and is dearly missed by his cat peanut.
When Guy’s first wife passed in 1996, he remained single until 2001, when he met Billie Jean Preston. They started dating in May and was never apart from that day on. In February 2022 they would have been married for 18 years. Billie Jean always told him that it was no accident for them getting together; God had sent him to her. He was a wonderful stepfather to her two children, Candace and Trent Boyd. Corkie was a great father, step-father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and last but definitely not least an exceptional husband! He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. God took my soulmate way to soon!!
He is survived by his wife, Billie Jean; sons, Tim and Ernie Koss; stepchildren, Candace and Norman Boyd; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; niece, Rochelle Yates and many very special nieces and nephews.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Rethal and Robert Koss and Guy Ernst; sister, Nova Jean; grandparents, George Koss and Lavina Jellison.
