
The last group of awards for the 2021 football season were announced Monday as the all-region teams were published in the Deseret News. Will Carmichael was the only member of the Carbon Dinos to get first team honors while Maddex Christman, Tyler Stilson, Jace Curtis, Derek Canterbury and Jax Jewkes represented the Emery Spartans.
All-region teams are created by each region under their own criteria and then are submitted to the Deseret News for publication.
For the Dinos, senior Will Carmichael who was named to the all-state second team, was a two-way player who shined no matter what position he played. On offense he went for 472 yards and three scores and on the defensive side had was credited with 64 tackles, one interception and three forced fumbles with one recovery.
The 3A South MVP was quarterback Alex Jackson of Juab, who went 217/317 for 3170 yards, 37 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Adrian Ward of Canyon View, was named the 3A South Offensive MVP. Ward ran the ball 176 times for 1668 yards and 15 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Wes Nielsen of Juab collected 47 solo tackles and seven interceptions.
Canterbury, Christman, Curtis and Stilson were all given all-state honors earlier this post season. This was Jewkes’ first accolade of the season.
Canterbury, a 6′ 200 pound offensive linemen did not allow any sacks all year. Christman, a linebacker, collected 99 tackles, 14 for a loss in 11 games played this season. In an injury plagued season in which he only played four games Curtis still managed 74 carries for 412 yards and seven touchdowns, he also had seven receptions for 97 yards. Stilson was on the defensive side playing linebacker and also earned second team honors collecting 77 total tackles, 14 for a loss and 10 total sacks on the season in eleven games. Jewkes, a senior, had 18 tackles and a sack this season for the Spartans.
Kyler Sudworks, quarterback for South Summit, was named 2A North MVP. Sudworks threw for 3241 yards 31 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Offensive MVP Caleby Thompson, a wide receiver from South Summit, had 91 receptions for 1522 yards for 13 touchdowns, he also rushed for 208 on 24 carries. The defensive MVP was Gabe Wilbur of Summit Academy with 50 solo tackles and 163 total.
