Castle Country Radio is kicking off the new year by naming Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation (SCWR) as their January Charity of the Month. Facility Director, Debbie Pappas took time from her busy schedule to talk about the services they provide.
SCWR is a non-profit charitable organization located in Carbon County that is dedicated to the care of sick, orphaned and injured wildlife. If you see an animal in distress the best thing to do is to call SCWR. “They actually can call me and that’s actually the best because with DWR, I mean those guys are great, but a lot of times they may not be able to get to the situation for hours. Call me and we have network of volunteers. But if you can’t remember to call me, call DWR, they most of the time will call me directly and say hey, we need your help, can you go out and do this,” stated Pappas. There are many types of patients that the facility helps including waterfowl, small mammals, song birds and raptors.
SCWR is volunteered based and relies heavily on donations and volunteers. “Our facility takes so many things and there’s something for everybody truly. I mean if you’re into paperwork, hey we can use you. But like also right now, look around, the snow, I mean I need people out there moving snow for us. We got large buildings that we’re trying to get to every single day, sometimes twice a day, to feed, to water. We’ve got to be able to get out to those buildings,” stated Pappas. Older, responsible teenagers who would like to volunteer to help clear snow for an hour or two can contact Pappas. If you are an individual who has specialized skills such as carpentry, electrical, concrete or just would like to volunteer at SCWR please also contact Pappas.
“They can call me at (435) 650-3441. Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation also has a Facebook page where you can make donations on it and they don’t take any fees out of there since we are a legitimate 501(c)3,” said Pappas. The monetary donations that SCWR receives assists with housing, food, medical supplies, veterinarian expenses, transportation and minor administration costs.
