There is always something fun to do in Ferron even during the winter months. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Ferron City Mayor Adele Justice to talk about the outdoor activities available in Ferron.
One of the big draws to Ferron is that they are a stone’s throw from Millsite Reservoir. “We love Millsite and the ice fishing tournament is usually pretty successful. You can drive up around the lake most anytime and see people out fishing. It’s close to the city, you’re not up high in the mountains, and its just a nice little getaway,” stated Mayor Justice. Millsite Reservoir recently held their annual ice fishing tournament at the beginning of the month and it was a huge success with anglers of all ages taking part in the event.
Ferron is located so close to outdoor recreation areas that even a four-wheeler or side-by-side ride can be enjoyed during the winter months. “You can get your snowmobile up on the mountain, and enjoy the powder that is up there. Ferron is so unique because of the Skyline Drive, if you can get up to Ferron Mountain and go across that Skyline Drive over into Orangeville and Huntington it’s a beautiful drive, and I’m sure its spectacular in the winter as it is in the summer,” said Mayor Justice. Folks are reminded to travel safely through winter roads while out in the backcountry.
You can always make a weekend of it and stay in Ferron to enjoy the local attractions. “We have a couple of nice Bed & Breakfast type businesses as well, so we have places people can come stay. You can still get out to the Rochester Art Panel out by Moore. Which is open in the winter and you can take that little hike. Its’ a nice little hike, something fun to see if you haven’t been there, that’s really, really worth it. Our ATV trails out on the desert, most of those are still open and you can get out there if you don’t mind bundling up in your ATV and going out for a ride. That’s a great option too,” explained Mayor Justice. Folks can stop by the local stores to obtain maps of the ATV trails near Ferron.
