The USU Extension is hosting a Vape Prevention Parent/Guardian Webinar on Tuesday, February 8 at 6:00 pm via Zoom. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Health & Wellness Prevention Coordinator, Josie Hatch to discuss all the details.
“So I work with Dr. Yaugher, we have a grant from the Southeast Utah Health Department to address the youth vaping epidemic here in Carbon County. We do trainings for teachers, we do trainings for parents, and we’re also going to do a youth after-school program, just to teach parents, teachers, youth how to prevent vaping in youth,” said Hatch. Trainings provided are evidence-based prevention programs and all information provided has been gathered from current evidence-based research and information.
Carbon County has the highest rate of vaping in the state. “So youth using e-cigarettes is the issue. They can be using them just as regular e-cigarettes and vaping, they could also be vaping marijuana or other substances. We’re most concerned about the youth using them because it is, they do mostly contain nicotine and it can be habit forming,” said Hatch. Most e-cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine that can be very harmful to an adolescent brain. This event will help parents/guardians know how to talk with their youth about vaping.
Parents/Guardians who register for the webinar will receive a swag bag with a voucher for a free meal from Grogg’s Pinnacle Brewing Co. “You would go click on our https://www.eventbrite.com/ link and sign up through https://www.eventbrite.com/ The tickets are free. Once you sign up, then this week, you can come to the Extension Office between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm to pick up your swag bag. You’ll get a bunch of free swag items plus a free gift card to Grogg’s for $12.00,” stated Hatch. The Zoom link will be emailed to those who register on the day of the event, along with a short (10 minutes or less) pre-survey. Post-surveys will also be emailed after the event, and officials ask that participants complete both surveys to fulfill the requirements of their grant.
