Our beloved Daddy, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa, Johnny Gutierrez (Grandpa Matt to his great-grandkids) passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on February 3, 2022, at his home in Price, at the age of 82.

He was born on June 5, 1939, in Lumberton, New Mexico to Vincente and Rosa (Gallegos) Gutierrez. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was always up for a good, long conversation and never ran out of stories to tell. His absence will leave a void in our hearts that will never be filled, but we find comfort in knowing what a reunion in heaven he had with family, and his dog Hemi who never left his side for 15 years.

At 21, Johnny married Betty Montoya, and together they had three wonderful girls: Trish, Rosalie, and Helen. They later divorced but remained friends. Johnny had a special love for the outdoors. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and riding his side by side with his family and friends, with Hemi always by his side.

Before retirement Johnny worked in all the union mines throughout Carbon County since the age of 17. He retired from U.S. Fuel in Hiawatha at the age of 55 because he always said, “I want to be young enough to enjoy my retirement.” He was a proud member of the UMWA Local 6363. All his friends new him as Ace, and his most famous saying to those close to him anytime he ran into you was “you ain’t shit.” He was known to give you an off-the-wall nickname, was a good friend to all, and anyone who crossed his path became a lifelong friend. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone.

How lucky we all are to have known such a great man. We could go on and on about how amazing he was, but if you knew him, you already knew.

He is survived by his daughters, Trish Frandsen (Sinsel), Rosalie Gutierrez (Dennis Pace), Helen (Leon) Crandall; grandchildren, Shannon (Joshua) Pierce; Steven Cloward “Shithead”; great-grandchildren, Dylan “Matt” and Gianna “Gigi”; sister-in-law, Stella Gutierrez; and numerous special nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Vincente Gutierrez and Rosa Gallegos Gutierrez; brothers, Raymond, Pat, and Joe Gutierrez.
