The Dino wrestling team traveled to Richfield to take part in the divisional round last Friday and Saturday. Under first year coach Trent Greenhalgh, Carbon has qualified 11 wrestlers for the State Champions and also added three alternates. All wrestlers who finished in eight place or above qualified for state competition which takes place Feb 16-17, back in Richfield at the Sevier Valley Center.
Brax Tapia at 120 lbs. and Colin Fausett at 144 lbs. claimed the top finishes for Carbon in second place in their classes. Others that qualified for state include Spencer Harker in the 106 class, Trevor Jones at 113, Issac Robinson who came in seventh at 138, Ashtun Guymon also at 138, who lost in his final match to team mate Robinson. Qualifying at 157 was Ajay Thayn, Eleke Lang at 165, Will Carmichael at 175, Hyrum Nelson at 215 and Edison Nelson at 285.
Carbon will also send three alternates in Jared Bryson, Kaden Donathan and Jonathan Jewkes.
Coach Greenhalgh joined KOAL’s Drive Time Sports recently to talk about the weekend and also brought up to telling stats that give him an idea about how good this team is.
“On Track, which is what the wrestling tournament runs off of to keep the brackets and everything straight, there was two statistics that I brought up to my team yesterday, one of those is seed to placement differential, we were second place behind Emery with that, which means that Emery over wrestled as well. What that means is if you were seeded 16 and ended up taking sixth, you actually get 10 points for that, not added on to the team score, just a statistic that they keep track of. We actually placed 14 places higher than we were supposed to so, to me that’s a sign that the kids are over wrestling what the should have or what they were expected to on paper. The other thing I thought was really cool, is I’ve been preaching, not just me but my whole coaching staff, score points, right? Sure a pin is awesome, but if it comes down to a close match, who ever scores the most points wins. So we talk about scoring points, scoring points, and that is also kept track of on that website, we actually came in fourth place overall in points scored during matches and that to me was a sign that it’s going the direction I want it to go.”
Carbon will be back on the mat next Wednesday and Thursday to compete in the 3A State Wrestling Championships. Check back with Castle Country Radio for the latest updates for all sports state playoffs as they become available.
