The streak of three consecutive 3A State Championships came to an end for the Carbon Lady Dinos as they closed out the swim season with a second place finish overall Saturday afternoon at the 3A State Championship Meet at Brigham Young University in Provo.

Competing against the large 3A field the Lady Dinos finished with 210 points, falling well short of first place Judge Memorial’s total of 316. Millard, Juan Diego and Ogden rounded out the top five.

“I’m pretty proud of the girls. When you go up against some of these private schools you don’t know what they are going to bring in, and we lost some key contributors last year,” said head coach Allie Chamberlain. “So I’m pretty happy how they ended up overall.”

While the Lady Dinos came up short in the overall team standings, they still managed to take home first place in one event. Thalyn Lyman, Mia Crompton, Tyrca Jaramillo and Alyssa Chamberlain combined forces to earn gold in the 200 freestyle with a finishing time of 1:47.71.

The first place finish time also broke a Carbon High School record.

“When you look around and see how many kids are competing, being able to say ‘we did this’ in an event is so, so exciting,” Chamberlain said.

The next highest finish for the Lady Dinos came in the 400 freestyle as the team ended in second at 4:02.47. The majority of the remaining points would be totaled in two other events.

Alyssa Chamberlain claimed third place in the 50 free style as she ended in 26.04. Lyman and Jaramillo finished sixth and seventh respectively. Chamberlain added another third place nod in the 100 freestyle as Jaramillo added depth scoring in sixth.

The Carbon boy’s team failed to finish inside the top eight overall as a team, but had plenty of success in the individual events.

Camden Chamberlain ended as the team’s top performer, finishing fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:18.38 and fifth in the 200 freestyle at 1:57.49.

Gabe Ibanez capped off his impressive 2021-22 campaign as he ended sixth overall in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 200 individual medley.

Following Saturday’s season finale it was announced that both Carbon teams were named Academic All-State for the fourth consecutive year.

“In the end, I’m more proud that they took that championship,” said Chamberlain. “To be an athlete and well rounded in the classroom is very difficult. To have both the boys and the girls do it, is pretty awesome.”
