It’s time for another Price City update and Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Mayor Michael Kourianos who spoke about the Asian Bistro Fundraiser, Coal Strike Team and the Bookcliff mural.
The Price City Youth Council held a movie fundraiser on January 29 to help raise funds to help the Asian Bistro recover from a fire. The event was able to raise about $500.00 towards the cause, including a $250.00 match donation from Puzzle Pediatrics. The fundraising is still going on and folks can still make a donation as Mayor Kourianos explains, “We are putting posters out in the community on these a-frames probably in our stores and city hall, places where people are walking and making it easy so that they can hit that QR code that’s on that poster and make a donation to a business that had some misfortune in their lives.” The Price City Youth Council hope to host some other fundraising events in the future to help the business financially.
The Coal Country Strike Team is an initiative to raise incomes in coal-dependent areas and they were able to give a presentation at the Utah Legislative session. “You talk about this Utah Coal Strike Team in the community, understanding what it means, and what it is all about. It was Kem C. Gardner Institute that came into our community saw that coal and coal-fired power plants, you know we need to diversify, hoping that coal will stay around but we need to make sure that we have a plan for our future,” stated Mayor Kourianos. A $1 million grant was given to the Coal Country Strike Team where they in turn awarded scholarships to Carbon and Emery students who were attending USU Eastern. The funds were also used to create a remote work center and a commercial kitchen which are both located inside the Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments building. All the facilities can be utilized by community members in both Carbon and Emery counties. The presentation was a huge hit on the hill and got folks talking about rural Utah communities.
A mural is being developed by the Bookcliff Sales building on Carbon Avenue. “You know the Shiners have been very generous on donating their wall to put up the longest mural in the state. It’s going to be a beautiful mural that’s going to have a timeline on it from Carbon Avenue all the way to 100 west. So that building north of Bookcliff that wall, they are going to take down the rock and we’re going to paint, and you know we have an artist from Helper that is going to paint a timeline of our community and how it was started,” explained Mayor Kourianos. If weather permits the project is scheduled to begin April 1.
