The Lady Spartans basketball season ended last Saturday with a win in the fifth place game against the Grantsville Cowboys. The season lasted exactly 100 days and started with a re-match of the 2020-2021 title game against Morgan in the Spartan Center. Emery claimed the 59-50 win and started their long march to February. Along the way they would rank as high as the No. 3 team in 3A and never dropped out of the top four.
Recently coach Lynn Tuttle joined KOAL’s Drive Time Sports to talk the state playoffs and approaching the off-season knowing that this year’s team was loaded with seniors.
“You spend so much time in the gym with these seniors, you’ve been with them for four years, you’ve watched them grow from a freshman to a senior and see how they grow physically and mentally and their basketball skills. I’ve actually got one daughter on the team but it feels like I’ve got several.”
The Spartans ended the season with an overall record of 19-6, going 4-2 in region play, and ending the season in fifth place in 3A.
Below is a recap of the 2021-2022 season for the Lady Spartans.
Nov. 18- Morgan- Win- 59-50
The game was every bit as advertised starting out in the first half as Emery would take a five point lead into the locker room. The Spartans seemed in control adding to their lead and claiming the win.
Led by senior Baylee Jacobsen who dropped 25 points grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists, the Spartans put out a full team effort and made up for Tuttle and Tanner’s absence.
“The girls get along so well, not even on the basketball floor, you get them out in every day social life they’re always together. Best friends they go back to being unselfish they don’t care who’s doing it they love to see each and every one of them succeed in what they’re doing.”
Brynn Gordon added 10 points and pulled down six boards and Addie Lester had nine points to go with her four rebounds. Daicee Ungerman snatched five steals and four rebounds as well in the victory.
Nov. 23- Manti- Win- 65-39
Coming off a big win against the defending state champ Morgan, the Spartans moved on to Manti. The last time these two teams caught up with each other was December of 2019, in that contest the Spartans finished off the Templars 49-36.
In the game on Tuesday, the Spartans came out in the first quarter outscoring the Templars 20-13. It was this kind of defensive display that would carry Emery throughout the game as they allowed 14 points in the second quarter and just 12 points in the second half.
It was Daicee Ungerman’s night as she went for 20 points and three rebounds. Baylee Jacobson dropped in 17, grabbed three rebounds and collected two blocks. Brynn Gordon added seven points and three rebounds in the win as well.
The Spartans now turn their attention to Uintah. The Utes will travel to Castle Dale Tuesday. In January 2020, the two faced off with Emery taking the 59-36 win.
After the game on Tuesday the Spartans will prepare for The Shannon Johnson Classic Tournament. Over the three days they will play one game on Thursday and one more on Friday. The biggest challenge will come on Saturday when they will play two games in roughly six hours.
Nov. 30 – Uintah- Win- 57-38
A dominate defensive second quarter performance gave the Emery Lady Spartans a double-digit edge as they closed out a three-game home stand with a comfortable 57-38 win over the Uintah Utes Tuesday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Carrying a 21-15 lead into the second quarter, the Lady Spartans outscored the 5A Utes 11-1 in the second stanza. The Emery offense sputtered for a brief moment in the third quarter, but responded with 18 points in the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Baylee Jacobson continued her hot start to the new campaign as she scored a team high 14 points on a 4-of-7 shooting from the field. A consistent threat throughout the first three games, Jacobson is currently averaging a team best 18.7 points per tilt.
After missing the first two games of the season senior Tambrie Tuttle made her first appearance as she poured in 12 points to go along with five rebounds and one steal. Junior Tatum Tanner also played for the first time this season as she tallied six points and three rebounds.
Emery has secured its place as one of the top teams in the 3A classification after an impressive start to the 2021-22 campaign. The early season resume’ already includes a win over the defending state champion Morgan Trojans and a lopsided victory over Manti. So far the Lady Spartans have defeated their opponents by an average of 18 points per game.

The Emery Spartans are in Vernal to take part in the Shannon Johnson Classic this weekend. In game one they faced the Ridgeline Riverhawks from Millville. The Spartans struggled on offense scoring double digits in only one quarter. Ridgeline took the victory 49-27.
Emery had been on a three game winning streak before the game with the Riverhawks. Ridgeline plays in the 4A classification and last season lost to eventual state champ Sky View in the quarterfinals
Emery had trouble with their offense early only scoring four points in the first quarter. They came out in the second scoring 11, but Ridgeline took a 29-15 lead into the locker room at the half.

Holding Pineview under seven points in each of the four individual quarters, Emery pulled away with a 15-6 run in the second quarter. The defensive clinic continued in the second half as the Lady Spartans allowed just 10 points over the final two quarters.
Tylee Norton led the way for Emery with 11 points, including one make from the three-point line. Tambrie Tuttle also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Dec. 12- Hurricane- Win- 61-28
The domination continued into Saturday as Emery once again throttled an upper classification opponent, this time powering past Hurricane 61-28.

In similar fashion to Friday, the Lady Spartans stifled Hurricane defensively as they held the Tigers under 10 points in each of the four quarters. The game was never in doubt as Emery gathered a comfortable 32-17 lead by the end of the first half.
Tuttle once again scored 10 points for Emery and Tatum Tanner also scored 10 in the win.

Juan Diego has had their own set of issues this season and it did not change against Emery who took care of the Eagles 48-28 behind 21 points from Tambrie Tuttle.
The Spartans were a model of consistency scoring 15 points in the first and fourth and nine points in the each of the second and third quarters. Only allowing the Eagles to score in double digits in the final period.

The Emery Lady Spartans ushered out 2021 last Thursday night in the Spartan Center by welcoming in the Union Cougars from Roosevelt. Both teams appeared to be evenly matched as this one went down to the wire with the Cougars taking the two point victory 53-51.
Union has a 3-9 record this season and is sitting at the No. 14 spot in the UHSAA RPI rankings.
Thursday’s game was very competitive with Emery taking a 29-28 lead into the locker room at the half.
Coming out in the third once again scoring was tight with Union outscoring the Spartans by three in the third quarter pushing the Cougars lead to 43-41, and then both teams played even in the fourth with Union picking up the two point win.
Tambrie Tuttle continues her great season scoring 17, going 4-of-5 from the three point stripe and grabbing five rebounds. Baylee Jacobson added 12 and Addie Lester dropped in eight with three assists.

Jan. 6- Richfield- Loss- 64-47
The Lady Spartans were back on the floor on Thursday night in Richfield to face the Wildcats. Emery has just seven games remaining on their schedule including two non-region match-ups. The game with the Wildcats was their first meeting of the season, and it didn’t go quite to plan for the Spartans as they fell to Richfield 65-47.
Richfield sits at 12-2 and holds the No. 2 spot in the UHSAA RPI. The RPI ranks all teams in each classification after every game played, then at the end of the season it is used for seeding in the state championships which will be held at Weber State University in February.
Emery and Richfield played even in the first quarter to eight points each. The Wildcats took over the next three, out scoring the Spartans in each one.
For the Wildcats, Nicole Willardson scored 24 with her team mates Rebecca Poulsen and Hallie Janes each scoring 12.
Tatum Tanner was the beneficiary of Richfield playing Tambrie Tuttle and Brynn Gordon so tough and holding each of them to 4 points each with Tuttle grabbing six rebounds and Gordon five. Tanner had a game high 26 points in the loss for the Spartans, she also pulled down three boards, and Baylee Jacobson added 11 with three rebounds and three steals.
Jan. 11- Corner Canyon- Win- 47-43
Coming off back-to-back losses at the hands of Richfield and Union, the Emery Lady Spartans hopped on the bus and traveled to Draper to take on Corner Canyon. Down by five at the half, Emery fought their way back in this one and came away with a four point 47-43 win Tuesday night.
The Corner Canyon Chargers play in the 6A classification and hold a 6-7 overall record they also sit in the No. 15 spot of the 6A RPI. The Chargers play in the same region as teams like Lone Peak, American Fork and Pleasant Grove.
Emery struggled in the first quarter and only could find five points in quarter two. Corner Canyon went into halftime up 22 to 17.
In the second half, the third quarter was a wash with both teams playing almost even. It was in the fourth that Emery found something, outscoring the Chargers 16-6 and taking the much needed win, breaking a two game losing streak.
Tambrie Tuttle found her stroke leading the way with 15 for the Spartans. Baylee Jacobson scored 13 off of 4-for-7 shooting from behind the three point line. She also pulled down four rebounds, dished out two assists and grabbed two steals and Brynn Gordon had 11 with four boards.
The Spartans sit at 11-4 on the season and still remain at No. 4 in the RPI. Emery has just six games remaining on their schedule and with the exception of a contest with Real Salt Lake Academy the remaining games are all region match-ups.
Jan. 14- Canyon View- Win- 59-23
Fresh off a win over Corner Canyon on Tuesday, the Lady Spartans got back to the business of Region 12 play Friday evening when they welcomed the Canyon View Falcons to the Spartan Center. Emery collected their first conference win with the 59-23 victory in front of the home town crowd.
The Lady Spartans have now put two in a row together since the loss to Richfield on January 6. Emery has five games remaining on their slate including one non-region game against Real Salt Lake Academy.
Emery was in control of this game from the start coming out and scoring 17 points in the first quarter while allowing Canyon View just two. The Spartans went into the locker room taking a 26-6 lead at the half.
In the second half it was more of the same as Emery would once again outscore the Falcons 18-2. Calling the dogs off in quarter number four the two teams played even both scoring 15.

The Spartans now own a 12-4 record and hold the No. 4 spot in the RPI.
Jan. 20- Carbon- Win- 50-29
Thursday night at the Spartan Center something had to give as the Carbon and Emery girls teams met on the court for the first time this season. Both the Dinos and Spartans have the same region record at 1-1, both have beaten the same team (Canyon View) and both have lost to the same team (Richfield), but on Thursday it would be the Lady Spartans that would move their region record to 2-1 and 13-4 overall with a 50-29 win over Carbon.
The Spartans, who are in the top 5 of the state RPI at No. 4, have just four games remaining on their schedule, with Grand leaving Region 12 to go independent that means that every team in the region has now lost two games off of their schedules, it also means that for the most part going forward teams will only have one game a week till the end of the season.
The Dinos on the other hand, sit at 10-6 and the No. 9 in The RPI and like the Spartans have just four games on the schedule as well.
Thursday night Carbon came out with an early lead that they were unable to hold on to as Emery found their stroke and methodically executed their game plan allowing the Spartans to take a 24-11 lead into the locker room at half time.
The second half was identical to quarter two as Emery would score thirteen points in all three quarters. Carbon just could not slow the Spartan attack down and suffered their sixth loss of the season and fell to 1-2 in Region 12 play.
Amiah Timothy led the way for the Dinos with seven. Madi Orth added six and pulled down four boards and Sydney Orth scored five, with two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Jan. 28- Canyon View- Win- 65-41
The No.4 Lady Spartans took the long road trip to Cedar City on Friday to face the Canyon View Falcons. This was the second meeting between the two squads and it echoed the first, an Emery Spartan win 65-41.
The Spartans and Falcons met up back on Jan. 14 with Emery claiming the 59-23 win behind Tambrie Tuttle’s 16 and Baylee Jacobson’s 14. Jacobson would control this one scoring 22 for Emery.
The Spartans were ready for Canyon View as they jumped out quickly in the first half 23-16. The Falcons were led by senior Harlee Nicoll with 15, but she was the only one to score in double digits for the Falcons.
It was really the second half where the Lady Spartans found their groove and put the Falcons away for good. Scoring 16 in the third and 26 in the fourth, Emery didn’t let them up for air with great defense, holding them to 14 in the third and just 11 points in the fourth.
Jacobson added 10 rebounds, three assist and two steals to her 22 points. Tuttle got on the board with 15, four rebounds and four assists and Addie Lester had six with three rebounds, two assists and three steals in the big region win for Emery.
Feb. 3 -Richfield- Win- 52-38
Thursday night at the Spartan Center, Emery took the court with the No.1 team in 3A, the Richfield Wildcats. In a game with huge region and state implications, the Lady Spartans took care of business and the Wildcats with a 52-38 win, holding Richfield to their lowest point total of the season.
Richfield has been making their way through Region 12 play this year, in fact Emery handed them their first region loss of the season. The Wildcats still hold on to the top spot in 3A, followed by Judge Memorial and a new team at No. 3, the Emery Spartans.
The first quarter was really all Emery, Richfield couldn’t find a bucket until the 3:14 mark, the Spartans kept feeding the ball into Tatum Tanner, who battled all night with the Wildcats Nicole Willardson.
The Wildcats would come firing back in the second putting together a small run at the end of the quarter that would cut the Spartans lead down to three at halftime 25-22.
In the second half, Richfield would come out and hit a three pointer at 7:29 to tie the game up and that was as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the game, as Emery went on a 21-8 scoring run in the third quarter. The final 8:00 saw the Lady Spartans slowly build on their lead while holding Richfield in check with their defense.
Tambrie Tuttle led the way for the Spartans with a game high 17 points, she also grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists along the way. Baylee Jacobson was right behind with 15, she also pulled down six rebounds. Jacobson and Tuttle are one and two in points per game this season for Emery.
Brynn Gordon and Tatum Tanner both put up seven points and three rebounds in the win.
The Spartans have a 15-4 overall record and share the top spot in Region 12 with the Wildcats, both teams have just one region game remaining on their schedules.
Feb. 8- Real Salt Lake Academy- Win- 66-20
Tuesday night was “Senior Night” in the Spartan Center as the Lady Spartans took on the Real Salt Lake Academy Griffins. Emery jumped out quick putting up 28 in the first quarter as a dozen Lady Spartans put points on the board and they earned the 66-20 win.
The Spartans will say good bye to seniors Baylee Jacobson, Dacie Ungerman, Tylee Norton, Brynn Gordon, Addie Lester, Tambrie Tuttle and Madisyn Childs at the end of this season, but until that point there is still basketball to be played.
Emery put up 28 points in the first quarter to just seven from RSL Academy. The Spartans would dominate on the defensive side of the ball in quarter number two, not allowing the Griffins to score and took a 41-7 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Coming out in the second half with the game well in hand Emery would continue to build on the lead that they had established in the first half, closing out their opponents by 46 points.
It was fitting that seniors would lead the way Tuesday night as Jacobson led the Spartans with nine points two rebounds and three assists. Ungerman added eight with three boards and five steals and Norton and Gordon both scored seven, Norton would add four rebounds and Gordon two boards and three steals.
The Spartans hold the No. 3 spot in the 3A RPI with a 16-4 record overall and a 4-1 mark in region play. The final RPI and bracket for the 3A Championships will be released Saturday, we will then know exactly who Emery will play in the first round.
Feb. 10- Carbon- Loss- 51-48
Tied at 48 with 1:16 left in the fourth, the Dinos and the Spartans were ready for the game to go down to the wire Thursday night in Price. They did not disappoint the fans in attendance as the two teams battled back and forth until a Madi Orth layup put Carbon up for good, winning the contest 51-48.
Madi Orth ended with 15 and Sydney Orth 14 , but no points were bigger than Sydney’s free throw with :31 seconds left to put the Dinos up by three. With the win Carbon ends the regular season with a 12-8 record, 2-4 in region play.
Emery led early in the game taking a 24-21 lead in to the locker room at halftime, in the third, the game was still played very tight with the biggest lead by either team coming as Carbon went up by four early in the quarter.
In the fourth, the two teams would trade buckets with neither team wanting to go away, two free throws by Baylee Jacobson would tie the game at 48. With time running out and Carbon up 51-48 a three point try by Jacobson was blocked by Madi Orth as time expired, moving Emery to 16-5 overall and 4-2 in region play.
Tambrie Tuttle dropped in 18 for the Lady Spartans on 5-14 shooting with seven rebounds. Jacobson added 14 and Tatum Tanner 11.

Earlier this season on November 18 Emery and Morgan faced off with Emery getting the best of them 59-50.
Feb. 24- Morgan- Loss- 45-42
Just like last year’s title game, the contest between the Emery Spartans and the Morgan Trojans went down to the wire. And unfortunately for the Lady Spartans, the Trojans ended Emery’s state title hopes with a 45-42 win Thursday night at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.
Tambrie Tuttle who started out the game on fire finished with 20 points pulling down nine boards in the process. Tatum Tanner scored 11, grabbing five rebounds and collecting four blocked shots. Baylee Jacobson scored six, with eight boards, three assists and two steals.

In the second half, the game got even tighter as neither team would let the other put that much distance between them. The Spartans battled the Trojans all the way through to the fourth quarter when things got even more interesting. In the final minutes, Emery was forced to foul to get the ball back, sending Janel Blazzard to the line where she hit four free throws in 35 seconds to end the game, and send the Morgan Trojans to a date with the Judge Memorial Bulldogs in the semi-finals.
Blazzard ended the game with 16 points and five rebounds for the Trojans. Alex Trussell added seven while pulling down nine boards and Elena Birkeland dropped in six.
Feb. 25- Carbon- Win- 55-36
Friday in the Dee Events Center on the campus of Weber State University, the Lady Spartans and the Lady Dinos met up knowing that it was win or go home. This was the third time the two teams played, with each team splitting the two meetings. In Friday morning’s contest it was the Emery Spartans taking the victory, moving on and the Lady Dinos going home after taking the 55-37 loss.
Thursday night both teams took part in the final two games of the evening. Carbon faced off with the No. 1 Judge Memorial Bulldogs, who came away with the 57-33 win. The Lady Spartans had their season come to an end this season the same as last at the hands of the Morgan Trojans, 45-42.
Sleeping fast both teams were back on the court at 11:10 Friday morning, and just like in the Judge Memorial contest the Dinos had a hard time scoring putting up nine in the first quarter and four in the second, the Spartans were able to put 26 points on the board taking a 26-13 lead into the locker room.
The second half was more of the first half with the Lady Dinos scoring just six in the third quarter. In the final quarter Carbon entered down 36-19,and rattled off 18 in the fourth, but the Lady Spartans were able to put up 19 taking the win.

Feb. 26- Grantsville- Win- 62-42
Emery started the season on November 18 with a win over then defending champion Morgan in the Spartan Center. Fast forward exactly 100 days and their season would come to an end the same way it began with a win, but this time it was for fifth place in 3A. Maybe carrying a chip on their shoulder from the game against Morgan on Friday, the Lady Spartans jumped out from the first whistle taking a 62-42 win over the Grantsville Cowboys.
Emery did something that only three teams in all of 3A were able to do, end their season with a win. Morgan ended their season with a win in the third place contest, and the winner of Judge Memorial and Richfield will be crowned state champion.
Senior Baylee Jacobson scored 21 for the Spartans and grabbed five rebounds. Tambrie Tuttle scored 14 with eight and Tatum Tanner, who the Cowboys could not find an answer for, scored 13 points, had nine rebounds and tallied six blocked shots.
Emery put up 31 points in the first half feeding Tanner down low, something that continued all game. Defensively they clamped down on Granstville allowing only 20 points.
The Cowboys came out trying to take charge in the third holding the Spartans to just eight points, but Emery saved their best for the fourth quarter, as they put 23 more on the board with seven different Spartans scoring.
Avery Allred scored 16 for the Cowboys in the loss, Baylee Lowder had seven and Emily Wear had five and led Grantsville with nine rebounds.
The Spartans end the season with a 19-6 overall and 4-2 in Region 12 play.
