The Carbon Dinos basketball team started the season with back-to-back wins against Delta and Union and they were off an running from there. They made their way through injuries and finished the season with a 10-11 record, going 6-2 in region play. Carbon ended the season in the No. 14 spot and faced the Judge Memorial Bulldogs in the opening round of the state playoffs, losing the contest 45-39.
Carbon boy’s coach Jared Butler joined KOAL’s Drive Time Sports to discuss the season and some of the close calls they had if the ball would have bounced differently.
“We were real close this year taking second in region, but couldn’t get past Canyon View (who) beat us by three, we had a couple of costly turnovers in that game at our place, and down there was a tough one, we got down early and big in the first half but we scrapped back to a six point game and then ran out of gas, that’s a really talented team.”
Below is a recap of the Carbon boy’s season.
Nov. 17- Delta- Win- 70-47
The Carbon Dinos hit the floor running on Wednesday night in Price as they welcomed the Delta Rabbits to open the 2021-2022 season. Losing the majority of their starting line-up from last year due to graduation, Carbon didn’t show it as underclassmen from last season who are now seniors stepped up and came away with the 70-47 victory.
In the first half, Carbon turned up the heat on the defensive side allowing just eight points from the Rabbits, taking a 30 point lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Dinos were actually outscored 39-32, but had built such a big lead that Delta couldn’t over come it.
Senior Rylan Hart lead all scorers with 27 points, he also grabbed seven rebounds and six steals.
Senior Jackson Griffeth dropped in 16 with 10 rebounds and four assists and senior Jordan Fossat added eight while dishing out seven assists.
Nov. 19- Union- Win- 51-48
A corner three with :16 seconds left from Ashton Ferguson gave the Dinos the lead and the win against the Union Cougars on Friday night at the Carbon High Gym. Coming off a win in the home opener against Delta, Carbon looked to keep that momentum going against Union. In a game that was every bit as close as the final score 51-48.
Last season these two teams met up in December with the Dinos taking a 64-52 win in Roosevelt. This time around the venue changed as did the personnel. Carbon lost six seniors to graduation last May, but so far the seniors this year have stepped up for some big minutes.
Union is coming off a 2020-21 campaign that had them losing in the second round of the 3A State tournament to Grand. The Cougars are the polar opposite to Carbon, losing just two seniors to from last year’s squad.
This contest was close from the beginning with both teams tied at the end of the first quarter and at halftime.
The Dinos would actually lose ground in the third falling back 38-32 at the end of the quarter. Looking to bounce back the Dinos would outscore the cougars 19-10 in the fourth with no points bigger than Ferguson’s three. The Dinos would increase their defensive pressure causing Union to throw the ball out of bounds and Carbon took the three point victory.
Jordan Fossat made some noise for the Dinos scoring 20 points, dishing out four assists and gathering one steal. Rylan Hart added 14, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Jackson Griffeth put in seven while grabbing eight boards and coming up with two blocks.
Nov. 23- Providence Hall- Loss – 71-51
The Carbon Dinos have enjoyed being home for the first three games of the season, in fact they will play three more before they head out for their first home game on December 8. The Providence Hall Patriots came to Price Tuesday night and when they left they took a 71-51 win with them.
The Dinos opened up this season with back to back victories, a blowout win over Delta and a nail-biter against Union. When the contest with Providence Hall began the Carbon fans maybe thought that they were going to get another close one with Carbon holding a slim 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The middle quarters turned out to be trouble for the Dinos as they were outscored by seven in the second and six in the third.
Going into the fourth down 49-38, the Dinos were forced to play catch-up with the Patriots, but couldn’t over come the distance and took their first loss of the season.
Rylan Hart led the Dinos scoring 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Jackson Griffeth dropped in nine and pulled down three boards. Jordan Fossat added eight with four assists and three steals and Paxton Kimber grabbed seven rebounds for Carbon in the loss.
Dec. 1- South Sevier- Loss- 63-46
The Carbon Dinos have been enjoying the start of the season by not having to leave the friendly confines of their own gym. On Wednesday night they played the final of their first four at home against the South Sevier Rams. Without one of their main contributors Rylan Hart, the Dinos struggled at times to find offense and fell behind in the second quarter ultimately losing 63-46.
Hart, one of Carbon’s leading scorers was ruled out at the beginning of the game with an injury that looks to keep him sidelined until January. Junior Chet Anderson, who started in his place put up 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. As a team Carbon ended the game shooting 33% from the field and also committed 16 turnovers.
The second quarter was where the Rams did the most damage outscoring the Dinos 25-7, doubling up the Dinos at the half 42-21. The Dinos would get as close as 13 in the fourth but had no answer for the hot shooting of the Rams from behind the arc, who collected 27 points from threes.
Jackson Griffeth was steady once again for Carbon with 14, four rebounds two assists and five steals. Jordan Fossat dropped 11 with a pair of assists and steals and Ashton Ferguson pulled down six rebounds.
Dec. 3- North Sevier- Win- 69-36
The Carbon Dino boys team traveled to Richfield over the weekend to play in the 3A preview tournament at the Sevier Valley Center. Sitting at a 2-2 record before play began, Carbon played two games in as many days facing the North Sevier Wolves and the Morgan Trojans. In game one against the Wolves it was all about the Dinos as Carbon claimed the 69-36 win. Game two with the Trojans though close resulted in a 55-45 Dino loss.
In their opening game of the weekend Carbon faced off with North Sevier. This game was really won by the Dinos in the even periods as quarters one and three were played very close.
In the second, Carbon held the Wolves to just eight points, all the while putting 20 points up on the scoreboard, then again in quarter four the Dinos outscored the Wolves 24-4.
Chet Anderson who has played big minutes in the last few games, scored 21 points in this one pulling down four rebounds in the process. Coach Jared Butler talked about Anderson in a recent interview on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports.
“He has stepped up and really helped us out at the varsity level. He’s just tenacious on the defensive end and then he works so hard to run the floor. In the North Sevier game he was just beating everybody up and Jordan (Fossat) or somebody else was finding him over the top, and then he just finishes that lay-up full speed tilt.”
Jackson Griffeth added 18 and pulled down 12 rebounds while Fossat dropped in 10 while dishing out six assists and collecting three steals.
Dec. 4- Morgan- Loss- 55-45
In the second game of the weekend, the Dinos took on the Trojans from Morgan. Carbon went back and forth with Morgan trailing 49-26 going into the fourth, the Dinos held the Trojans to just six points but they couldn’t overcome Morgan’s lead and lost the contest by 10.
In the next man up mentality of the Dinos this season, Braxton Stevenson led all scorers in the game with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, he also pulled down five rebounds and snagged two steals. Fossat scored 12 while adding two assists and two steals. Jackson Griffeth grabbed seven rebounds and Cole Cripps added five in the loss.
Dec. 8- North Sanpete- Loss- 58-41
The Dinos were back on the road again on Wednesday night in Mount Pleasant to face the North Sanpete Hawks. The Hawks were a perfect 5-0 headed into the contest with Carbon and added one more win to their total taking a 58-41 victory.
This game was really a tale of two halves. In the first quarter the Dinos played even with the Hawks in fact taking a three point lead into the locker room.
In the second half , the Dinos could not keep pace with North Sanpete getting outscored in quarter three by eight and then by 12 in the final quarter.
Jackson Griffeth scored 14 for the Dinos adding three assists and two steals. Griffeth has been a steady presence for Carbon averaging 11 points per game this season.
Jordan Fossat added ten and dished out two steals and Braxton Stevenson came off the bench to score eight with three rebounds and two assists. As a team the Dinos shot 30.8% from the field compared to North Sanpete’s 45.1%.
Dec. 15- South Summit- Loss- 66-56
Senior Jackson Griffeth scored 16 while Jordan Fossat and Braxton Stevenson both scored 11 but it wasn’t enough as the Dinos dropped a road contest against South Summit 66-56 on Wednesday night in Kamas.
The scoring was fairly even by quarter throughout the game as South Summit quietly built their lead ending with the 10 point advantage.
Stevenson and Ashton Ferguson led Carbon pulling down five boards each, Stevenson also grabbed five steals and Griffeth added four assists in the loss.
Dec. 17- Uintah- Loss- 61-51
Coming off a 66-56 loss on Wednesday the Dinos were back on the court Friday night to welcome the Uintah Utes to Price. Senior Jackson Griffeth’s 30 points led all scorers but was not enough as the Dinos fell 61-51 to the Utes in front of the home crowd.
Uintah jumped up to the 5A class this season and have quickly made their way to a 6-2 record this season. Saturday the 11, they defeated the Emery Spartans in Vernal and last Wednesday they beat the Union Cougars in Roosevelt. The Dinos beat the Cougars in the second game of the season in November.
In this one Uintah jumped out to a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and had pushed it to 26-18 at the half. Carbon matched the Utes point total in the third scoring 18 and also played fairly even in the fourth 17-15, but were never quite able to overcome the deficit losing by 10.
Griffeth added three rebounds and four steals to go with his 30. Ashton Ferguson had five with seven boards and Paxton Kimber and Braxton Stevenson scored four each with Stevenson adding three rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Dec. 20- Juab- Loss- 68-60 (OT)
Carbon boys basketball found themselves on the road on Monday night to take on the defending 3A state champion Juab Wasps in Nephi. In a highly competitive match-up that would go in to overtime the Dinos fell behind and were forced to foul and send Juab to the line where the Wasps made their free throws taking the 68-60 win.
The first half of the game was played very close with Juab nursing a one point lead headed into the locker room at the half 24-23. The third quarter is where the Dinos made their move outscoring the Wasps 17-7 in the period and going into the final quarter up by nine.
The fourth quarter and overtime period were all about Juab though , as the Wasps outscored Carbon 25-16 in the final eight minutes to tie the game at 56. In the overtime Juab found a way to put up 12 points on the board, mostly from the line as Carbon was forced to foul to try to get the ball back.
Jackson Griffeth put up 26 points, coming off his 30 point effort against Uintah last Friday.
Chet Anderson put up 18 and Braxton Stevenson added 14 for the Dinos in the loss.
The Dinos head into the Christmas break 3-7 and have yet to enter their region schedule.
Jan. 7- American Leadership- Win 75-68
The Carbon Dinos haven’t played a contest since Dec. 20 when they dropped a heart breaker to Juab, 68-60 in overtime. That loss would bring an end to a disappointing 2021 calendar year but bring the opportunity to put a five game losing streak behind them and bring a chance at redemption on Friday night when they faced American Leadership Academy (ALA) in Spanish Fork. The Dinos had three players score in double digits as the Dinos earned the 75-68 win.
American Leadership is No.17 at 5-8 playing in Region 15 with teams like Judge Memorial, Real Salt Lake Academy and Providence Hall.
The first quarter was played pretty tight with Carbon only carrying a one point lead in to quarter two. If you could pick where the Dinos made their move it would be in the second when they outscored American Leadership by six and took a 35-28 lead to the locker room.
In half two, Carbon kept pace playing even, out scoring ALA 18-17 in the third, and turning around in the fourth, Carbon was outscored 23-22.
Two Dinos were responsible for 47 point as Jackson Griffeth scored 24 and Chet Anderson added 23. Braxton Stevenson dropped in 13 for Carbon in the win.
The Dinos sit in the No.15 spot in the UHSAA RPI rankings and hold a 4-7 record overall and have yet to step into Region 12 play, and that will change on Wednesday when they travel to take on the Grand County Red Devils.
Jan. 12- Grand- Win- 67-52
The Carbon Dinos earned their first region win on Wednesday night on the road in Moab against the Grand County Red Devils. A quartet of Dino players scored in double figures in the game as Carbon looks to make some noise in the RPI standings as we get closer to playoff time. The Dinos took charge at the beginning and never looked back taking the 67-52 win.
The Red Devils have had a rough beginning to their season, going 5-10 to this point and a No. 19 rank in the RPI. Wins for the season have come against Green River, Monticello and Gunnison, Colorado.
Carbon jumped out 14-10 in the first quarter and kept the pace going into the second quarter pushing the lead to seven 29-22.
In the third, Carbon came out firing once again collecting 20 more and taking a 49-33 lead in to the final quarter. The Red Devils could not come up with an answer and the Dinos came away with the win.
Jordan Fossat led the Dinos with 14 in the victory. Rylan Hart, who is working his way back from injury found 12 while Jackson Griffeth and Chet Anderson collected 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Dinos have a 5-7 record and sit at No. 15 in the UHSAA RPI. Carbon has eight games remaining on their schedule and with the exception of Manti every game going forward is against a Region 12 opponent, starting Friday night when they will host Canyon View.
Jan. 14- Canyon View- Loss- 66-63
The Dinos were riding a two game win streak heading into the contest on Friday night with the Canyon View Falcons at home. Things were pointing toward a third straight win as they headed into the locker room up by seven at the half. Unfortunately, Carbon came out flat in the third and fell behind in the fourth losing 66-63.
Carbon took care of business last week on the road against American Leadership 75-68, then they turned around on Wednesday of this week traveling to Moab against Grand and picked up their first region win of the season 67-52.
The contest with Canyon View started out with the Dinos taking the early lead in the first quarter going up by seven. In the second quarter the Dinos and the Falcons played even.
In the third, Canyon View made their move putting 20 points on the board and pulling level with the Dinos at 49. Late in the fourth, Jackson Griffeth had an opportunity with a possible game tying three that would fall just short and send Carbon to its first region loss of the season and eighth overall.
Griffeth and Rylan Hart both scored 15 in the contest, Hart also pulled down seven rebounds. Chet Anderson found the basket for 12 points, he also collected three assists and two rebounds and Jordan Fossat dropped 10 points and seven boards in the loss.
The Dinos sit at 5-8 this season and 1-1 in region play. They also find themselves in the No. 15 spot in the UHSAA RPI.
Next week will be a good measuring stick for Carbon.
On Wednesday they will travel to Richfield to take on the No.14 Wildcats.
Then on Friday night the Emery Spartans come to Price, when these two teams get together no matter what the sport it is always fun.
Jan. 19- Richfield- Win- 63-55
Coming off of a loss last Friday night to Canyon View and with Emery waiting for them, the Carbon Dinos were on the road in Richfield Wednesday night to face the Wildcats. The Wildcats just had back to back wins against Emery and Grand. It is well known that Richfield is always a tough place to get a win, but the Dinos did just that 63-55.
The Wildcats hold a 6-9 record and sit in the No. 14 spot in the RPI rankings for 3A. Led all season by 6’7″ senior Connor Holroyd, who had 12 in the game, Richfield has compiled wins against Delta, South Sevier, Piute and Kanab as well.
The Dinos came out in the first half and kept things close going into halftime down 28-25. In the second half Carbon kept the pace with Richfield, but in the fourth the Dinos took the game over scoring 24 with 11 coming from the charity stripe. More impressively they held the Wildcats to just 15 points in the quarter to seal the win.
Carbon holds a 6-8 record with just six games left on the schedule, two with Emery and re-matches with Grand, Canyon View and Richfield, plus a non-region game with Manti, the Dinos could make some noise and move up in the RPI from where they sit now at No. 15. Up next is a home game with the Emery Spartans.
The Spartans will enter the contest at 4-10 and No. 16. Coming off a victory over Canyon View last Friday. Emery is being led this season by sophomore Luke Justice who is averaging just under 11 points per game.
Jan. 21- Emery- Win- 49-48
An instant classic ended in Carbon’s favor as they topped the Emery Spartans 49-48 in a Region 12 thriller Friday night at Carbon High School.
Trailing at the end of each of the first three quarters, the Dinos rallied in the fourth to hold off a determined Emery effort.
Carbon held a 49-45 lead in the closing seconds, but Emery senior Ryker Jensen banked in a three-point shot from 30-feet out with less than five seconds remaining. An inadvertent whistle from the officials, mixed with the Carbon student-section storming the court, caused a referee conference. The officials placed one second on the clock and gave Carbon the basketball. A down court lob was enough to run out the clock and preserve the win for the Dinos.
“They rushed the court and there was still time on the clock. The way it was explained to me was, yes it is against the rules, but they thought the game was over,” said Emery head coach Dave Justice. “So the referees decided to replay the situation. As an Emery or a Carbon fan, I get it both ways. That’s how they explained it to me and that was the end of the game. It was a great effort from both teams and a really fun game to be apart of.”
The confusion, and somewhat controversial ending, did not diminish the brilliant effort from both sides. While both teams swapped leads throughout, neither was able to establish much of a cushion. The competitive contest added to the electric atmosphere of the standing room only crowd that filled the Carbon gym.
Carbon’s perimeter scoring proved to be the difference in the fourth quarter. Over the final eight minutes the Dinos outscored the Spartans 15-12 to earn the monumental region win.
“In this type of game you hope to get an eight to 12 point lead and that is when you put your foot on their throat, and we couldn’t get there,” said Carbon head coach Jared Butler. “There were turnovers, missed looks and they would capitalize. They were fantastic tonight and we feel fortunate for sure.”
Jackson Griffeth led the Dinos with 17 points as he connected on three shots from beyond the arc. Fellow senior Jordan Fossat also knocked down three shots from the perimeter as he scored 13 points. As a team the Dinos finished 8-24 from deep.
Chet Anderson helped guide the Carbon offense at key times during the game as he posted seven points. Rylan Hart chipped in with six points and five rebounds, while Braxton Stevenson recorded a team high seven boards.
Defensively the Dinos forced 22 Emery turnovers, giving them a plus-nine edge in the key category.
Emery junior Brett Rasmussen delivered perhaps his most solid outing of the season as he scored a team best 13 points to go along with 15 rebounds for the game’s lone double-double. Seven of his 15 boards came on the offensive glass.
The Spartans were efficient from inside the three-point line as they connected on 17 of 30 attempts from two-point range. Emery also converted four shots from deep in 12 attempts.
Ryker Jensen scored all nine of his points from the three-point line, while Luke Justice used his ability to get to the basket and score eight. Wade Stilson stuffed the stat sheet with six points, seven assists and four steals.
Friday’s win puts Carbon in the drivers seat for a Region 12 championship. Following the first round of region play, the Dinos hold a 3-1 record, which allows them to control their own destiny over the final four league games.
Jan. 28- Grand- Win- 82-40
Rylan Hart, Chet Anderson, Braxton Stevenson and Jordan Fossat all scored in double figures on Friday night when the Dinos welcomed the Grand County Red Devils to Price. Carbon used a good first half and even better second half to claim the 82-40 win, moving them to 8-8 overall and 4-1 in region play.
Led by Hart’s 21, the Dinos went up five in the first half and never looked back or took their foot off the gas, taking a 34-20 lead into the locker room at half time. But it was in the second half that the Dinos did some serious damage.
Coming out in the third, the Dinos found an extra gear scoring 21 in the quarter but more impressively holding the Red Devils to just eight, and then again in the fourth putting another 27 points up and coasting to the 42 point win.
Hart added six rebounds and two steals to go with his 21. Anderson put up 13, three boards and three assists. Stevenson had 13, three rebounds, two assists and four steals and Fossat scored 11, handed out six assists and three rebounds.
Carbon sits atop the region standings, and could take a huge step to their first Region 12 title on Wednesday when they go on the road to Cedar City to take on Canyon View. These two teams met up back on Jan.14 with Canyon View handing the Dinos a 66-63 loss.
Feb. 2- Canyon View- Loss- 68-55
The Dinos were looking to even the score on Wednesday night in Cedar City as they tried to avenge their only region loss to the Canyon View Falcons. The game started out quietly but a big second quarter from the Falcons created a sizable deficit for Carbon as they lost 68-55.
Back on January 14, these two teams met up in Price in a highly competitive contest that watched Canyon View leave with a 66-63 win. In the game Rylan Hart and Jackson Griffeth both scored 15. After the loss Carbon went on a three game win streak against region opponents Richfield, Emery and Grand.
The game on Wednesday night started quietly, with the Dinos keeping it close down by three after one, 7-4. In the second, Canyon View found another gear on both sides of the ball holding Carbon to six points and scoring 22 taking a 29-10 lead into the locker room at half time.
In the second half Carbon came out ready to play, chipping away at the Falcon lead putting up 20 and cutting the advantage to 14 points. In the final quarter, Carbon found another 25 points to put on the board but the damage from the second quarter was too much to overcome, and they were handed their second region loss and ninth overall.
Jordan Fossat had a great game for the Dinos scoring 17. Fossat has had an impressive year so far, averaging just under 10, along with three rebounds and four assists per game.
Rylan Hart added 10 and Jackson Griffeth nine.
The Dinos dropped one spot in the RPI to No. 15 with their 8-9 record. They have just three games remaining on their schedule. Two region contests and one non-region game.
Feb. 4- Richfield- Win- 62-49
The Dinos welcomed the Richfield Wildcats on Friday to the gym at Carbon High. This was the second time this season these two hooked up, in January the Dinos came out on top 63-55. This game got off to a rough start with seven combined turnovers in the first four minutes, but things would eventually settle down and Carbon would claim the 62-49 victory.
Richfield holds an 8-11 overall record and is 4-3 in Region play. Entering this contest they were riding a two game win streak with wins over Emery and Grand. They will head south for their final regular season game against Canyon View on Wednesday.
In the early parts of the first Richfield struggled with the press from the Dinos, finding a way around it they took a 10-4 lead with about two minutes left in the quarter. Carbon slowly made their way back, tying it up with five seconds left on a Jackson Griffeth put back.
At the 5:12 mark in the second quarter the Dinos went on a 6-0 run for the next sixty seconds pushing the score to 21-12 and causing the Wildcats to take a timeout. The run would continue after the timeout with Carbon going on a 7-3 run to close out the half.
In the third Carbon, stretched their lead to 40-26 and then heading into the fourth kept the intensity going. The Wildcats actually outscored the Dinos in the quarter but Carbon held on to the lead and closed out the game 62-49.
Rylan Hart scored 19 in the game pulling down four rebounds and grabbing three steals. Since returning from injury Hart has averaged 13 points per game. Braxton Stevenson scored 13 with two assists and two steals, and Jackson Griffeth put up 12 with eight rebounds four assists and three steals.
The Dinos are all knotted up at 9-9 overall this season and 5-2 in region play. The RPI has been hidden now until this Saturday at 9 when the final rankings will be released as will the brackets for the state championship tournaments that will begin on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
Feb. 9- Loss- Manti- 84-66
The Manti Templars jumped out early and Braxton Stevenson’s 22 and 13 points from Rylan Hart did little to help as the Templars defeated the Dinos in Price on Wednesday night 84-66.
Manti jumped out in the first quarter doubling up the Dinos 20-10. The Templars kept the same pace all game long scoring at least 20 in every quarter.
Christian Hanson of the Templars scored a game high 25 and junior Dylan Anderson put up 14 in the Manti win.
The Dinos’ Cole Cripps grabbed five rebounds and Jackson Griffeth added three steals and three assists in the Carbon loss.
Feb. 11- Emery- Win- 56-49
The regular season came to an end for the Carbon Dinos and Emery Spartan basketball teams on “Senior Night”, Friday in the Spartan Center. These two teams both started their long march to the playoffs back in November. Jumping out in the first quarter and behind 17 points from Rylan Hart, the Dinos took one from the Spartans 56-49.
It was Senior Night for Emery as they said goodbye to two players, Kysen Curtis and Ryker Jensen. Curtis has averaged just under eight points this season and five rebounds. Jensen scored just under seven and gathered just under four boards.
Braxton Stevenson added 15, Chet Anderson nine and Jordan Fossat, eight for Carbon as they wrapped up the season with a sweep of the Spartans this year. The Dinos jumped out in the first quarter taking a 14-7 lead they would hold the lead at seven headed into the locker room at half time 23-6.
Carbon entered the third quarter putting up 18 and Emery would hang with them bucket for bucket as they scored 17 in the quarter, they then followed up in the final quarter outscoring the Dinos by one, but the Spartans couldn’t get over the hump as the Dinos had an answer for everything Emery tried.
Wade Stilson of Emery led all scorers with 20 in the contest. Brett Rasmussen added 14 and Luke Justice six for the Spartans.
Now both teams look to Feb. 16 when they will begin the 2022 playoffs. Carbon will be at home after ending the season in the No. 14 spot and Emery will head out on the road after landing in No. 17.
Emery will take on the No. 16 Providence Hall Patriots. These two teams didn’t face off in the regular season, in fact you have to go back to February 20 of 2016 when these two tangled in the first round of the playoffs with Emery coming away with a 69-53 win.
Carbon will welcome the No. 19 Judge Memorial Bulldogs. You only have to go back to January 5 of 2021 when the two teams locked up in Price with the Bulldogs coming away with a 66-51 victory.
State Playoffs:
Feb. 16- Judge Memorial- Loss- 45-39
The opening round of the state playoffs started on Wednesday night as the No.14 Carbon Dinos welcomed the No.19 Judge Memorial Bulldogs. The Dinos struggled finding offense throughout the evening and when the final horn sounded Carbon’s season ended with a 45-39 loss.
The Dinos came into the evening looking to advance and head to Grantsville for the next round on Saturday, but the Bulldogs had other plans holding Carbon to 26% shooting in the contest.
In the opening half of play both teams would put up nine points in the first quarter, the separation would come in quarter two, with Judge putting up 14 while holding Carbon to nine, the Bulldogs would take a 23-18 lead into half time.
In the second half, Judge and Carbon would battle back and forth, with Grantsville waiting for the victor. The tug of war would end as time ran out in the game and on the Dinos, as the Bulldogs took the six point win and move on to the next round.
Rylan Hart led Carbon with 14 points and eight boards in the contest, Braxton Stevenson added ten and a trio of Dinos, Chet Anderson, Jackson Griffeth and Jordan Fossat each added five.
Aaydan Saucedo, Anywan Kuang both scored 16 for Judge in the win. Will Selfridge added eight.
