
The Carbon Dino softball team started the season on the road beginning last Thursday taking two wins over Pine View and Hurricane. They then started play in the Warm Up Elite Tournament in St. George, earning a win in the first game with Pleasant Grove in the first of three games on Friday. The rest of the schedule was taking on the best of the best from 6A and 3A. Carbon claimed wins over Grantsville and Grand but fell to Riverton and Cyprus.
Below is a recap of the games played.
Mar. 11- Riverton- Loss- 11-0
In talking to some of the players on this year’s team, quite a few were looking forward to taking on Riverton, the 6A defending champs. Riverton finished last season 24-1 and had nine players return to this years squad.
Riverton would jump on the Dinos early, scoring four runs in the first and end the game in four innings 11-0.
Haven Byerly got the start going 3 2/3 innings, giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on seven hits and struck out 7. Kylan Sorenson came in to go 1/3, striking out 1.
Gia Bruno went 2-2 and Sorenson went 1-1, collecting the only hits for the Dinos.
Mar. 11- Grantsville- Win- 13-2
The nightcap game for the Lady Dinos was a meeting with the 3A defending champion Grantsville Cowboys. The Cowboys went 19-6 and last season beating Manti in the championship game. Carbon and Grantsville locked up last season with the Dinos coming out on top 4-3 in extra innings.
The Dinos came out swinging putting up six runs in the first and allowed the Cowboys just two runs in the third.
In the fourth the Dinos would add six more runs to the score board, taking the win in four, 13-2.
Carbon found offense in this one with Mollie Horsley going 2-3 with three RBI’s. Tenley Madsen also had three RBI’s going 1-4 from the plate. Haven Byerly and Reese Ardohain each had two RBI’s as well.
On the mound Kylan Sorenson earned the complete game victory allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and collected three strikeouts.
Mar. 12- Cyprus- Loss- 6-0
At noon on Sunday the Dinos headed back to the field to face the Cyprus Pirates. Cyprus had a 17-10 record last season losing to Layton in the second round. Cyprus plays in the 6A class.
Cyprus put Kenley Henson on the mound against Carbon and she allowed just two hits and struck out 10 in this dominate win.
Bruno and Horsley would both go 1-3 collecting the only hits for the Dinos.
Byerly went two innings giving up three earned on one hit and struck out two. Madsen would enter the game going four and surrendering three runs two earned on five hits and struck out three.
Mar. 12- Grand- Win 11-1
The weekend ended with the Dinos facing Grand County. Last season these two teams faced each other four times splitting the season series. The last win went to Carbon and came in the form of an elimination game in the state playoffs 7-6.
This game Carbon wouldn’t mess around taking the win in four innings, 11-1.
Offensively, Byerly went 2-3 with three RBI’s and Bruno would go 2-3 with two RBI’s, as the Dinos scattered nine hits across four innings. Makayla Scovill added three runs, going 2-2 from the plate.
Sorenson collected another complete game giving up one earned run on five hits, striking out three.
The Dinos will be back on the field on Tuesday as they host the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle at 3 p.m., at the Carbon County Fairground Softball Complex.
