The USU Extension – Carbon County is hosting another segment of Castle Country Gardens & Landscapes for Beginners entitled Native Plants & Pollinator Friendly Landscapes. This workshop will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:00 pm on the campus of USU Eastern in the Reeves Building Room 122.
“I think everybody has kind of heard the save the bees kind of discussions that are happening throughout the country the past few years. We have seen pollinator decline throughout the U.S. and so that has gotten some attention. People feel like they want to or maybe feel obligated to kind of help pollinators and you can do that even on home landscape scale,” said Extension Assistant Professor, Steven Price. This workshop will talk about various plants that thrive in our area that folks can plant in their flower beds to help with pollinating.
There are some native plants that attract pollinators such as Russian Sage and Salvia. “Some of our other ones, even things like Candy Tuft, is a nice little flower and actually some other types of beneficial insects that are pollinator Syrphid Flies, actually love those, and they also take care of your aphids,” stated Price. Not only are bees in our area pollinators but also some flies too. The workshop will discuss the different pollinator insects that are in our area.
This workshop is intended for beginner gardeners, homeowners or general public. “So if you want to register it’s $5.00. You can find the information on https://www.eventbrite.com/ to sign up. You can also contact your local county Extension Office. The class will be held at the Reeves Building on USU Eastern campus,” stated Price.
