The Lady Spartans are coming off a tough loss to Duchesne last Thursday and were looking to get back on the field against the Juab Wasps on Wednesday afternoon in Nephi. The Wasps jumped out to an early lead, Emery was forced to play from behind and their rally came up just short falling 14-11.
Emery struggled last week against Duchesne in a 13-2 loss. Juab may have remembered last season’s exit by the Spartans in the elimination game at the state playoffs last season, and have six returning members from last year’s squad.
Emery put runs up in their first at bat scoring three, unfortunately the Wasps came back scoring six each in the first two innings taking a 12-7 lead into the fourth, while their defense held Emery scoreless in the middle innings.
In the top of the sixth, Emery started a rally scoring three in the inning and then kept Juab off the board in the bottom. Emery would put up one more run in the seventh but that was as close as they could get falling three runs short, and losing their second contest of the season.
Tylee Norton connected four times at the plate with four RBI’s and also scored two runs. Taija Olsen went 3-5 with two RBI’s with one run. Jalynn Fox added two RBI’s as well in the loss.
The Spartans used three pitchers against Juab, Aspen Taylor, Madisyn Childs and Cambrie Jensen combined for 12 hits walking 10 and striking out three.
Emery heads south now for the March Warm Up Classic in St. George, where they will face five teams in two days, playing the likes of Bonneville, a 5A team from Washington Terrace, and another Bonneville team from Idaho Falls plus Skyline, Dixie and Altamont.
The Spartans will return home to open region play with Grand, game time is set for 3 p.m..
