Carbon standout pitcher Haven Byerly fanned 16 batters and struck out the side four times in a complete game effort as the Lady Dinos earned a hard fought 5-3 win over the Uintah Utes on the road Wednesday afternoon.
Entering Wednesday’s tilt winners of their last two outings, the Carbon offense provided instant run support for Byerly as they posted four runs in the opening inning. Uintah slowly chipped away at the Carbon advantage, but never captured the lead.
Byerly’s dominance helped the Lady Dinos maneuver through a dry spell offensively as the team was shutout for five innings. Limiting the Utes to just four hits, opportunities came at a premium for the opposing team.
Stevie Oman continued to find success at the plate as she finished 1-3 with a two RBI. Tenley Madsen also contributed two RBI as she finished 1-2. Gia Bruno was the lone Carbon player to record multiple hits with two as the team finished with seven overall.
Carbon drew first blood as Oman laced a two RBI single into left field with two outs in the first inning. The two-out rally continued at the next at bat as Madsen singled to center to put two more runs on the board.
Uintah finally erased the zero on the scoreboard as they plated their first run of the game in the third inning. Two more runs in the fifth frame brought the Utes within one run. The score remained 4-3 entering the seventh.
Following two walks to start the top of the seventh, Bruno knocked a single to center field to load the bases. Makayla Scovill grounded into a fielders choice, which allowed Adri Abeyta to cross home plate, giving Carbon an insurance run entering the the bottom of the final inning.
With two outs and the winning run at the plate Byerly was able to complete the seven inning effort as the third out came as a pop out to left field.
Now 7-2 on the season Carbon will prepare for a home meeting with Grantsville on Friday. Carbon won the first meeting just last week in a 13-2 dominating performance.
