The Dinos found themselves down early on Friday against the defending state champion Grantsville Cowboys, who put up nine runs in the first inning. Unable to awaken their offense, Carbon fell at home 14-2.
The Lady Dinos had just beaten Grantsville on Mar. 11 at the tournament in St. George, on Friday and were looking forward to facing them again on the field at the Carbon County Fairgrounds, the results we’re almost identical with the exception of the winner.
Being the visitors, Grantsville put points up first, scoring nine in the top the the inning and then would use their defense to hold Carbon scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when they scored one and then again in the bottom of the fifth scoring another run, but that was all the scoring they could muster.
Reece Ardohain and Makayla Scovill were both able to put RBI’s on the board for the Dinos as Carbon was held to just two runs across six innings, Carbon also moves their season record to 7-3. Pitcher Kylan Sorneson was given the loss.
Up next for Carbon is another team they have been looking forward to taking on since last season’s loss in the state tournament, the Manti Templars.
Last year, these two teams faced each other in the semi-finals of the playoffs and after a hard fought battle the Templars knocked the Dinos out of contention 8-7 in nine innings. Manti would move on to lose in the next round to Grantsville.
The Templars finished last season 28-4 and have five players off of last year’s squad that return this season. They currently sit at 2-7 .
The two squads will meet each other on Tuesday at the fairgrounds and will follow up by kicking off region play against Richfield on the road Friday.
The contest against Manti is set to begin at 3:30.
