The weather is starting to change and the ice is beginning to break on area lakes and streams as well as community ponds in Helper, Price and Wellington, which means that it will soon be time to get out and enjoy them and to help with that the Division of Wildlife office in Price will be holding a beginner’s fly fishing course coming up on April 23.
Aaron Bott, Conservation Outreach Manager with the Division of Wildlife office in Price, joined us to discuss the upcoming clinic along with local fishing opportunities in our area.
“Here we’ve got the community pond over at the fairgrounds, we’ve got Gigliotti Pond in Helper, we’ve got Knight-Ideal out in Wellington. We’re hoping to get them stocked within the next couple of weeks and the different cities will be opening up the gates, so get your fishing licenses and get ready to go catch some fish.”
In another part of the interview Bott talked about a fun event for the whole family, a fly fishing clinic that will be held at the Division’s office. The clinic will include a hands on portion that will take place at the community pond at the fairgrounds and is intended for beginners. It will teach participants an introduction to fly fishing techniques that will be taught by Division staff as well as a local fly fishing expert.
“We actually have our resident fly fishing expert who’s going to be coming out from the community to help teach us how to get into it, what techniques to do and we’ll actually spend the afternoon over at the Carbon County Pond fly fishing and testing it out.”
There will however be a limit on how many people can attend, you can also register for the event online.
” We’re going to cap it at about 30 people and we’re putting this up online for people to register at eventbrite.com, and we’re really excited to get people out and fly fishing.”
All those that attend are asked to bring their own rod and reel, waders will not be needed. If you don’t have your own equipment there will be some available to borrow. And they also would like to remind all participants over 12 that they will need a valid Utah Fishing License.
