The Carbon Dinos opened Region 12 play with an offensive explosion Wednesday afternoon, easily sweeping a double-header with the Grand Red Devils in front of the home crowd at Carbon High School.
Originally scheduled to start division play on Tuesday, inclement weather pushed the double-header back to Wednesday. The extra day was worth the wait for spectators as they watched the Dinos earn a dominating 31-1 victory in game one, followed by a 22-5 victory in game two.
Wyatt Falk allowed just one base runner as he pitched a scoreless and hit-less three innings to set tone in the field for the Dinos. It took Falk only 60 pitches to record four strikeouts and set up Dallyn O’Neil for a relief appearance in the top of the fourth to close out the game.
Falk’s dominance on the mound was matched with instant run support as Carbon posted 10 runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Rylan Hart started the at bat with a lead off single and was quickly joined on base by Keaton Rich and Jordan Fossat on eight straight balls. Colton Lowe plated the first two runs of the game with a double to deep center field.
The score remained 10-0 entering the bottom of the third, but the Dinos quickly turned the game into an absolute blowout. A total of 22 consecutive batters reached safely as Carbon scored 21 runs in the longest inning of the season. The top of the fourth was a mere formality as the team earned its third consecutive victory.
Lowe ended 3-4 at the plate as he brought in four runs to go along with one walk. Fossat matched Lowe’s total of four RBIs as 12 different players brought in runs for the Dinos. As a team Carbon recorded 26 RBIs, 15 hits and 11 walks.
The success in the first game carried over into the second of the double-header as Carbon once again ended Grand by the mercy rule, this time in five innings.
Jumping out to a 7-0 lead entering the third inning, the Red Devils found a bit of success by scoring four runs in the top half. Grand added one more in the top of the fourth to chop the Carbon advantage to two, but the Dinos quickly responded to put the game away for good.
Rich started the bottom of the fourth with a triple to right field and scored four pitches later as Fossat singled to the same part of the diamond. The quick start was contagious for the rest of the lineup as Carbon scored 15 runs before being retired.
Two triples led to a team-high six RBIs for Lowe in the second game of the afternoon as he finished a perfect 2-2 at the dish. Rylan Hart plated four runs with a single and a triple in three at bats, while Jacob Vasquez finished 1-2 with three RBIs.
Fossat earned the win on the mound as he tossed four innings, striking out six batters and allowing four runs on four hits. Camden Wilson pitched the top half of the fifth giving up just one hit to close out the win.
Now winners of four straight games the Dinos have improved its overall season record to 6-5, but more importantly 2-0 in Region 12 play. The team will return to the field on Friday with a trip to Moab to closeout the season series with Grand in a single game.
The Region 12 format will consist of three games with each team over the next five weeks. The three games will feature a double-header on Tuesday and a single contest on Friday.
