The MECCA Mountain Bike Club will be hosting a mountain bike festival in Green River at the John Wesley Powell Museum April 29 – May 1. Terri Bennet with the club spoke with Dave via telephone to talk a little about this festival and how everyone can participate.
“We have some beginner rides where they’ll ride a trail called Nephritis and it’s just a dirt road, pretty flat, it’s about 18 miles round trip along the Green River. This ride is geared toward families with kids and people who are just getting on their bikes and just getting started into mountain biking. We have an intermediate ride that is out on the San Rafael Swell called the Three Fingers Canyon. Again, that’s on like 4-wheeler type roads, 17 miles out and back, great time riding through some beautiful pictographs, that’s the highlight of that ride.” There will also be an advanced ride outside of Green River City called the Three Canyon’s Ride. Terri states “it’s a pretty rigorous and strenuous ride but not extremely technical.” These rides will all take place on Saturday.
On Sunday you are able to go do rides on your own without guides. However, there will be guides giving suggestions of where you can go ride depending on your skill level.
Sunday the highlighted trail with being a new trail called the Good Water Rim Trail which is Emery County’s highlighted single track trailed originally designed and constructed by LeMar Guymon. This trail is not recommended for children as it takes place right along the edge of the Swell.
Terri talked about how this festival is different from other bike festivals. “This is a little different than some festivals some people have been to. We don’t have a lot of fancy vendors and a lot of that stuff going on. We mostly focus this on families and people just coming out and enjoying and relaxing.”
The event will have a dinner Friday night with giveaways as well as snacks that will be provided to all riders on Saturday and then a full dinner Saturday night.
