apple-grafting

The USU-Extension Carbon County is hosting an Apple Grafting seminar on Monday, April 25 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Carbon County Event Center. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Extension Assistant Professor, Steven Price to discuss all the details.

“Some people don’t realize that when you look at a modern apple tree it’s grafted. So the rootstock or the roots have different genetics than the top of the tree. We do that to add precociousness to the tree so it’ll start producing sooner. It also allows for trees to have disease resistance and it also just allows our trees to be more hearty and grow in different locations that they wouldn’t otherwise,” stated Price. This event is a perfect opportunity to acquire the concept of grafting while learning hands-on how to graft your own trees.

The cost to attend the seminar is $25.00 and includes two apple trees. “So if you want a new tree this a great way for you to come learn how to do this process on your own and you’ll actually walk away with two new trees that you can plant or you can give them to somebody special if you want to use your own scion wood later. It’s just teaching you the process and the tools so you can actually do this in the future,” stated Price.
