By Jose Briseno, Castle Country Radio:
The Carbon Dinos scored a total of 23 runs in their doubleheader sweep of the Emery Spartans, winning 11-0 and 12-8.
The Dinos dominated from the very beginning of game one as Carbon had complete control on offense and defense. Jacob Vasquez got the start on the mound and threw all seven innings for the Dinos. Vasquez allowed eight hits but did not allow a single run to cross the plate for Emery. Rylan Hart and Beau Vea led the Dinos with two RBIs each. Hart, Keaton Rich, Jordan Fossat and Dallin O’Neil each recorded multi-hit games for the Dinos.
Trevin Wakefield was the starting pitcher for the Emery Spartans. Wakefield tossed five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three strikeouts. Ty Stilson appeared in the game for Emery to throw the final two innings. Stilson allowed seven runs, five earned, on six hits and three walks.
Carbon scored two runs in the top of the second inning to set the tone. The Dinos would go on to add one run in the fourth and fifth innings before they unleashed an onslaught of five runs in the sixth inning. Unable to muster any offense, the Spartans greatest downfall was the inability to drive in runners who were in scoring position. The Spartans were able to manage eight hits in the game but stopped themselves during attempts to start rallies.
Emery came out firing in game two of the doubleheader as they opened scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Oakley Alton.
Carbon and Emery traded runs in the third inning as Rylan Hart drove in a run for Carbon and Alton added his second RBI of the game as he reached on an error to bring in a run.
Carbon added two runs in the top of the fourth after Ridge Nelson and Jacob Vasquez knocked in two runs. Emery, however, would respond immediately with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. The Spartans strung together four straight singles to drive in four runs and retain a 6-3 lead.
Carbon added one run in the top of the fifth on a Jordan Fossat RBI double before adding another five runs in the top of the sixth. The Dinos batted around as every player in the lineup stepped into the batter’s box. Jacob Vasquez, Dallin O’Neil, James Castro, and Rylan Hart all recorded an RBI in the inning. Emery would try to respond but could only muster two runs in the final two innings before Carbon shut the door with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Oakley Alton and Easton Nielson pitched for the Spartans and allowed twelve runs on eighteen hits. The spartan pitchers did not record a strikeout but did allow just one walk. Gannon Ward, Jace Mangum and Oakley Alton all recorded two RBIs.
Beau Vea started for the Dinos while Keaton Rich finished the game. Vea allowed all eight Spartan runs on ten hits. Rich threw two innings and did not allow a run or a hit. Vea and Rich combined for three strikeouts, the only strikeouts to be produced in the game.
Next up for Carbon and Emery will be a match up in the third game of the series on Thursday, Apr. 21. First pitch will be thrown from Carbon High School at 3:30pm.
