Price City each month sends a representative to Castle Country Radio to keep listeners posted or informed on various topics. This month brought in Price City Public Works Director, Miles Nelson who spoke on water conservation, weeds and potholes.
Water conservation is going to be another hot topic this summer as snow levels were low over the winter. “It’s been a tough year again, our snow pack only reached about 80 percent this year on average. We had a time it was a little bit higher than that, then it came off a little bit early this month and our Scofield Reservoir is only at 33 percent capacity. We’re still in a drought situation, we’re still looking to make adjustments to our water usage this year,” said Nelson. City officials were very pleased with how the water conservation efforts played out over the summer last year that they are applying the same rules again for this year.
A water conservation committee with gather again over the summer months to talk water management for the city. “We launched a water conservation committee this last year and it’s active still this year. We have the mayor, council member representative, Rick Davis, and representatives from the big water users in town which are USU Eastern, the school district, and ourselves, we have our own significant amount of lawn on parks and those areas,” said Nelson. The city is working on bringing technology to help with the timing of watering throughout the city properties because this would eliminate overwatering and watering during rainstorms.
There is a weed ordinance that citizens are to follow when it comes to their property. “Just a reminder that the weeds are going to come whether you water or not and the parkways are the responsibility of the adjacent landowner to keep those parkway’s weeds under control. Please control those weeds and keep those down and keep our city beautiful,” explained Nelson. Citizens are urged to dispose of there weeds by utilizing the county’s landfill.
Over the winter months there has been issues with potholes on some of the city streets and now that it’s warming up this issue will be dealt with. “As we move into the warmer weather, we finally have asphalt available to be able to do patching on the roads. It’s difficult during the wintertime to patch those roads because we have to use what’s called a cold mix, it doesn’t hold as well like the hot mix does. So now that we have hot mix available, we’re going to be doing a lot more patching of potholes, getting those holes filled to prevent damage to property,” stated Nelson. If residents see a pothole that needs attention, please contact Public Works at (435) 637-5010.
