Finishing up the regular season on April 22 with a 2-0 win over Richfield on Senior Night in Castle Dale, the Spartans waited until April 27 to find out that their opening round opponent would be Union. Emery was ranked No. 11 and Union No. 22 which meant the Spartans would host the Cougars on Friday. Emery came out, finding the back of the net twice and claimed the 2-1 win, moving on in the playoffs.
Emery compiled an 8-6 record going 5-3 in region play. The Spartans had faced the Cougars earlier in the season in tournament play in St. George, getting the better of Union 2-0.
In the game Friday, both teams were able to put up a goal in the first half taking the one-all tie to halftime. In the second half of play the Spartans were able to put another score on the board and in the process keep Union out, earning the win.
Alex Noriega came up big for Emery scoring both goals in the contest adding to his total for the season.
Up next for the Spartans is a road meeting with Morgan on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Morgan is ranked No. 6 and is last year’s runner up in 3A.
