The Dino baseball squad put the regular season to rest on Monday and claimed the Region 12 title with their win over Canyon View in Price on Senior Day. Carbon had split the double-header in Cedar City back in April. Carbon jumped out scoring all four runs in the bottom of the third and held Canyon View to just three runs taking the win 4-3.
The game on Monday was in essence a region title game with both teams entering the contest with identical 9-2 records in conference play. The Canyon View Falcons were also one spot ahead of the Dinos in the state RPI rankings at No. 2.
Both teams started out quietly going scoreless through the first two and a half innings.
In the bottom of the third with two on Rylan Hart came to the plate and hit a line drive to second base reaching on an error and driving in James Castro. Next batter up Keaton Rich sent a double to left field bringing home Beau Vea and Hart. Chet Anderson came up to the plate and the second pitch would get away from the Canyon View catcher allowing Rich to score from second putting the Dinos up 4-0.
The Falcons made things interesting in the top of the fifth, as Carbon gave up two runs on a walk and an error. Canyon View was quiet in the top of the sixth and really had something going the top of the seventh after a single and then a double that brought in one run the made the score 4-3, but after that Vea who came in and went 2.2 innings settled in and struck-out the final two batters slamming the door shut on the Falcons.
Rich got the start on the bump giving up just one earned on three hits while striking out five. Camden Wilson took over in the fifth and allowed one run and stuck-out one.
Rich came up big on the offensive side going 1-3 with two RBI’s and scoring one. James Castro was 2-3 at the plate and scored a run and Vea was 1-2 and put up a run of his own.
Carbon now waits until Thursday when the final RPI will be released along with the bracket for the 3A State Baseball Championships. If Carbon ends in the top four spots they will host a first round pod that will begin on May 7.
The venue will switch to UVU May 12 & 13 for the final three rounds with the championship game taking place on May 14.
