With the track and field season winding down the Spartans traveled to Provo last weekend for the BYU Invitational. Over 100 schools from throughout the Intermountain West took part with schools ranging from 1A to 6A. The schools were broken down into two groups 1A-3A and 4A-6A. After two days the Emery boys came out tied for 17th and the Lady Spartans tied for 34th.

The team from Evanston Wyoming finished in first place in the boy’s categories with 71 points, Richfield finished second with 55.5. Sugar Salem High School from Idaho Juab High School and Snake River High School from Idaho rounded out the top five.

Jess Christiansen has had a great season when it comes to distance running and it would continue as he earned a second place finish in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:20.82. Christiansen would also finish in sixth place in the 3200 meters.

Derek would continue with his successes in throwing events this year taking a sixth place finish in the discus and seventh in the javelin.

Union High School took the top prize on the girl’s side with 59 points, Canyon View came out in second place with 46. Morgan, Mountain View High School out of Wyoming and Preston High School from Idaho made up the remainder of the top five.

Whitley Christensen earned a fourth place finish for the Lady Spartans in the high jump competition.

Up next for Emery on Tuesday and Wednesday in Cedar City, Canyon View will host the Region 12 Track and Field Championships. Following the regional meet the 3A State Championships will be held at Brigham Young University on May 19-21.
