The second week of the 3A baseball and softball state tournaments are set to continue as Carbon and Emery’s teams still have a possibility of deep tournament runs. Here’s a preview of the first games of the weekend:
Baseball:
The Carbon baseball team needed five runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a walk-off win over Grantsville last weekend to set up a quarterfinal showdown with the top-ranked Juab Wasps. Carbon and Juab faced each other in an early-season matchup on Mar. 23 that saw Carbon walk away with a convincing 16-6 win. This matchup, however, will be a closely contested game as Juab enters the weekend on a 16-game win streak. The last time Juab lost was to this same Dino team. Carbon, the Region 12 champs, will take on the Wasps at 11am on the campus of UVU Thursday morning. If the Dinos win, they will advance to the semifinals, which will take place on Friday. If the Dinos fall, they will fall to the one-loss side of the bracket. Carbon’s first game against Juab will air on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM beginning at 10:30 a.m..
The Emery Spartans went 1-1 last weekend in the opening round of the state tournament. After a 7-6 win over the Union Cougars, the Spartans fell to the top-seeded Wasps 11-1 to fall into the one-loss bracket. The Spartans will take on conference-foe Grand County as the two will duke it out for the fourth time this season. The Spartans swept the season series over the Red Devils but will need to make it four straight in order to keep their season alive. Emery and grand will square off at 1:30pm at Mountain View High School. If the Spartans advance, they will head to UVU to take on the winner of the Grantsville-Manti matchup, a game that will take place at 7 pm the same day. With a loss, however, the 2022 Spartan season would conclude. If the Spartans defeat the Grand Red Devils, the second game of the day against either Manti or Grantsville will air live on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM at 7:00 p.m..
Softball:
The Lady Spartans entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and took care of Ogden High, 15-0, in round one of the tournament. With the victory, Emery sets up a matchup with No. 4 South Summit that will take place on Thursday at 10 am at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex. With a win, the Lady Spartans will play Friday afternoon against the winner of the Carbon-Grand matchup. If Emery were to fall, they would play a second game on Thursday against Union at 4:45 pm in the one-loss bracket.
Entering the state tournament as the overall No. 1 seed, the Carbon Lady Dinos showed just that in their first-round game versus Juan Diego. Carbon advanced 25-0 to set up a matchup with conference rival, Grand County. Carbon and Grand have played each other three times this season, Carbon winning twice. The Dinos and the Red Devils will face off at 10 am Thursday morning. A win could set up possible matchup with Emery or South Summit. If the Dinos fall to the Red Devils, they will take on the Morgan Trojans at 4:45 pm on Thursday in the one-loss bracket.
