Carbon Dinos tennis traveled to Richfield last Friday for the Region 12 Tournament. The Dinos have put together some impressive wins late in the season as they prepare for the state tournament later this week.  Carbon took third place overall and all team members qualified for state play.

South Sevier claimed the top spot followed by Richfield. Carbon, Canyon View and Gunnison Valley made up the remainder of the top five.

Derrick Jorgensen competed in the first singles category going 1-2 finishing in fourth. Jorgenson won his first match against Brandon Lee from Canyon View. In round two he would fall to Gunnison Valley’s Nate Stewart, and would fall in the third round to Tyler Saunders from Richfield.

Branden Scovill would fall in both his matches with Gunnison Valley and Grand.

Cameron Jones in third singles went 2-1 finishing in third place. Jones earned wins in his match with Grand County’s Cooper Custer 6-1 and 6-2.  He also took out Josh Walton from Canyon View 6-2, 6-1.

The first doubles team of Alex Callahan and Zac Gregerson grabbed a second place finish overall, taking their round one match from San Juan 6-1 and 6-0. In the semi’s they defeated Grand County’s Oran Moore and Jacob Jones 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Garrett Bryner and Nathan Bauduin  ended the day in third, beating Gunnison Valley 6-1 and 6-1. They also won their next round over Canyon View 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2. They fought against Britton Singleton and Chandler Barclay of Richfield, going three sets.

All teams from Carbon qualified to move on to the 3A State Tennis Championships, which will start on May 19 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
