Three Carbon High School student-athletes earned track and field championships at the season-ending state championship meet Friday and Saturday at Brigham Young University in Provo.
Senior Haylee Prescott became a two-time state champion in the high jump with a leap of 5-01, topping Union’s Grace Thomsen’s 4-11. Prescott’s success continued in the long jump as she posted a second-place finish and was also apart of the 4X100 relay team, who finished third overall with a time of 51.05.
“No one really knows the pressure that comes along with trying to repeat,” said coach Jim Jewkes. “To be able to accomplish this is remarkable. What made it even more crazy is the weather wasn’t really cooperating when she jumped, and she managed to block all that out and did what she needed to do to get the win.”
Traxton Jewkes entered rare air as the freshman became a state champion in the high jump, leaping past Richfield senior Connor Holroyd. Jewkes topped the field with a jump of 6-02. Holroyd and Union freshman Gavin Miller both finished with a 6-00 jump.
“Traxton is jumping since he was five or six years old and he’s been around the program for a really long time,” said Jewkes. “Being a freshman makes it difficult to take in the whole atmosphere. We have a great senior in Will Carmichael who was jumping with him, being a great teammate. After Will was eliminated, he was really encouraging and that helped Traxton a lot.”
Bowden Robinson was the second Carbon senior to win a state championship as he topped the state field in the javelin. Robinson launched the javelin over 165 feet, easily beating second-place by 11 feet. Robinson’s state championship comes following a third-place finish at last year’s state championship. Robinson also finished fourth in the shotput.
“Bowden has had an outstanding year. He broke the school record in the javelin and has won numerous meets,” Jewkes commented. “He had a nagging injury, but he put together a gutty performance to win the state title and I just cannot say enough about him.”
As a team the Carbon Lady Dinos gathered 57 points, which placed them fifth in a field of 18 teams. Delta won the state championship with 96 points, followed by a second-place tie between Morgan and Union at 88.5. Canyon View grabbed fourth, completing the top-five with Carbon.
Eminie Elliot put together a stellar weekend as she accumulated points for the Lady Dinos with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Elliot also joined Prescott, Mia Crompton and Lyndee Mower in the 4X100’s third-place performance.
Junior Haley Garrish took home second-place in the discus one week after breaking the school record in the same event. Garrish added to her outstanding weekend with a fourth-place nod in the shot put.
Senior Lindsey Jespersen scored five points for Carbon as she ended fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with an ending time of 48.44.
Carbon gathered 31.5 points on the boy’s side of the track, finishing eighth overall in a field of 17 teams. Richfield claimed the state title with 100 points, topping second place Morgan by 10. Union was third, followed by Delta and Emery to round out the top-five schools.
The weekend finale brings an end to one of the most successful track and field seasons in school history. Monday head coach Jim Jewkes was a guest on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports, you can listen to his complete interview below:
