The Emery Lady Spartan softball squad ended the season going 16-9 overall and posted a 5-3 record in Region 12. The season came to an end for Emery on May 12, with a loss to Union, 4-1 in the one-loss bracket.

Senior Tylee Norton led the Spartans with a .522 batting average that included 32 RBI’s and five homeruns. On the mound it was another senior Madisyn Childs who carried a 5.90 ERA and a 7-2 record.

With just five seniors on the roster this season, the Lady Spartans will reload for next season and be ready to get back at it in March 2023.

Below is a recap of the games from the 2022 season.

March 9- Beaver- Win- 24-10

Senior Cambrie Jensen went 5-6 with two home runs and four RBI’s  and Tylee Norton 3-5 with two home runs and six RBI’s in the Lady Spartans debut this season on the diamond as the traveled to Beaver on Wednesday coming home with a 24-10 victory.

The Spartans were anxious to get back on the field after last season, losing to Grand in the one-loss bracket of the state playoffs,  7-1. With six returning seniors and new head coach Cody Jensen, the Lady Spartans are looking to make some noise this season.

The Lady Spartans jumped out early and never trailed in the contest. Emery collected 28 hits while as a team they only recorded four strikeouts on offense and left just four on base.

The Beavers would get it as close as 9-8 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Spartans held their opponent to no runs on the fifth while they added five more pushing the score to 14-8 headed into the final two innings where Emery outscored Beaver 10-2 and claimed the 14 run win.

Along with Jensen and Norton’s contribution, Aspen Taylor went 4-6 with five RBI’s and Brooklynn Ekker and Madi Bunnell registered three RBI’s each in the rout.

Madisyn Childs gets the complete game giving up 10 runs (eight earned) on 15 hits, walking four and striking out 11.

March 10- Duchesne- Loss- 13-2

Coming off a big win on Wednesday against Beaver, the Lady Spartans returned home to face the Duchesne Eagles in Castle Dale, Thursday. Things did not go as planned for the Spartans as they struggled on the offensive side of the ball only coming up with two runs falling 13-2.

The Eagles are a powerhouse team from 2A that finished last season at 19-8 and 10-0 in region play. Emery and Duchesne faced each other last year with the Spartans coming out on top 9-8.

In the game on Thursday, both teams were unable to put any points up in the first inning. In the top of the second the Eagles erupted putting eight on the board.

The Spartans scattered ten hits over six innings with Tylee Norton and Brooklynn Ekker the only players for Emery to cross the plate. Cambrie Jensen had the only RBI for the Spartans in the loss.

For Duchesne, Lexi Morlan went 3-4 scoring three runs and posting five RBI’s.

On the mound for the Spartans Madisyn Childs and Jensen split duties. Jensen would take the loss putting in four innings of work giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on nine hits and stuck out four. Childs went two innings giving up two earned runs on three hits and stuck out four.

Emery now takes off until Mar. 16, when they will travel to Nephi to face Juab.

They will then head south to St. George for a tournament. They will be back home on Mar. 23 to start region play against Grand.

March 16- Juab- Loss- 14-11

The Lady Spartans are coming off a tough loss to Duchesne last Thursday and were looking to get back on the field against the Juab Wasps on Wednesday afternoon in Nephi. The Wasps jumped out to an early lead, Emery was forced to play from behind and their rally came up just short falling 14-11.

Emery struggled last week against Duchesne in a 13-2 loss. Juab may have remembered last season’s exit by the Spartans in the elimination game at the state playoffs last season, and have six returning members from last year’s squad.

Emery put runs up in their first at bat scoring three, unfortunately the Wasps came back scoring six each in the first two innings taking a 12-7 lead into the fourth, while their defense held Emery scoreless in the middle innings.

In the top of the sixth, Emery started a rally scoring three in the inning and then kept Juab off the board in the bottom. Emery would put up one more run in the seventh but that was as close as they could get falling three runs short, and losing their second contest of the season.

Tylee Norton connected four times at the plate with four RBI’s and also scored two runs. Taija Olsen went 3-5 with two RBI’s with one run. Jalynn Fox added two RBI’s as well in the loss.

The Spartans used three pitchers against Juab, Aspen Taylor, Madisyn Childs and Cambrie Jensen combined for 12 hits walking 10  and striking out three.

Emery heads south now for the March Warm Up Classic in St. George, where they will face five teams in two days, playing the likes of Bonneville, a 5A team from Washington Terrace, and another Bonneville team from Idaho Falls plus Skyline, Dixie and Altamont.

The Spartans will return home to open region play with Grand, game time is set for 3 p.m..

The Spartans will pick up again Saturday at noon against Dixie and then end the weekend with Altamont at 2 p.m.

March 23- Grand- Win- 15-4

Emery started slow on Wednesday against Grand, but used two huge innings to put up 14 runs to close out the game and secure the 15-4 win. Three different Spartans earned at least three RBI’s, including Brynlei Luke who went 1-3, hitting a home run, driving in three runs.

After the first inning runs scored by Grand, the Spartans put the clamps on defensively allowing just two more runs in the contest. Madisyn Childs went five innings to get the win giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out four, throwing 62 pitches.

Emery sits at 6-3 and put their first region win on the board with the victory over Grand. Up next for the Spartans they will face Canyon View on Friday at home.

This will be the first game between the two schools since Canyon View joined Region 12. Last season they played in the 4A class and earned a 24-7 record, putting together the best offense in 4A as well as the fourth best defense. They lost to Tooele in the championship round. Tooele went on to fall to the eventual 4A champion Bear River in the final.

The game is set for a 3:30 start in Caste Dale.

March 25- Canyon View- Win- 7-3

The Emery softball team earned its sixth straight win Friday as they welcomed the Canyon View Falcons to Huntington on Friday. Aspen Taylor and Brynlei Luke each went yard in the Spartans 7-3 win.

Emery hasn’t lost a game since falling to Bonneville on March 18 at a tournament in St. George and since then have outscored their opponents 70-18.

The Lady Spartans held the Falcons scoreless until the top of the fifth but by then Emery had already put up seven runs, six from the bats of Taylor, who went 2-4 with three RBI’s and Luke who was 1-3 with three RBI’s.

Cambrie Jensen earned her third win in the season, going seven innings giving up three runs (one earned), on nine hits with six strikeouts.

Emery has a busy week ahead as they have three games on the schedule this week with Richfield, Manti and Carbon.

First up is a meeting on the road with the Richfield Wildcats. The Wildcats have struggled a little this season sitting at a 6-6 record, they are coming off a 21-1 loss against Carbon on Friday.

Thursday will see the Lady Spartans travel to Manti, the 3A state runner-up last season. Manti is sitting at 4-8  and their last match-up was a win over South Summit.

The Lady Dinos will meet up with Emery in Huntington on Friday at 3:30. Carbon is sitting at 9-3 and 1-0 in region play, this will be the first meeting against these two teams this season.

March 29- Richfield- Win- 10-0

The Lady Spartans started off a very busy week on Tuesday when they welcomed the Richfield Wildcats to town. Cambrie Jensen turned in another gem on the mound allowing just three hits as she pitched five shutout innings and propelled the Spartans to their eighth overall win and third region victory, 10-0.

Emery is riding a seven game winning streak headed into a two games in as many days against teams that made a deep playoff run last season, Manti and Carbon.

On Tuesday, the Spartans and Wildcats both went scoreless in a very quiet first inning, it wasn’t until the bottom of the second that Emery would score their first run.

Emery would use pitching and their defense to keep Richfield off the board for the remainder of the contest, and put up nine more including a big fifth inning when they put up four runs and ended the day with the Wildcats in five.

Tylee Norton went 3-3 with one run and an RBI. Brooklynn Ekker was 2-4 including a home run with a couple RBI’s.  Jensen helped her own cause going 1-2 with two RBI’s and Jaylnn Fox was 1-1 with four RBI’s in the Spartan win.

The Lady Spartans will get back on the field on Thursday when they travel to Manti to face the Templars, last years 3A runner-up.

April 1- Carbon- Loss- 15-0

On Friday the Lady Dinos and Spartans faced off on the field in Huntington for the first time this season. Carbon needed just four innings to take care of the Lady Spartans. Haven Byerly pitched a gem allowing no hits and no runs as the Dinos moved their season record to 11-3 and a 2-0 Region 12 mark.

Emery just couldn’t get anything started on the offensive side, unable to find a hit in the contest with Carbon.

On the defensive side, it didn’t get much easier as the Spartans used two pitchers. Madisyn Childs took the loss going three innings giving up 14 runs (13 earned)  on 13 hits. Aspen Taylor came in going one inning giving up two hits and one earned.

Earlier in the day on Friday, the Utah High School Activities Association released it;s initial RPI  in which the Dinos landed in the top spot and the Spartans were in the No. 3 spot.

After the game with Carbon the Spartans headed to Payson for a tournament where they played four games on Saturday.

April 2- Payson Tournament

Coming off the loss to Carbon on last Friday, the Lady Spartans turned their attention to a quartet of games ahead of them in Payson on Saturday. Facing teams from Union, Payson, Manti and Duchesne, Emery would return home after the weekend 3-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of the Manti Templars.

After the weekend the Spartans have an overall record of 11-5 with a 3-1 mark in region play. Emery also holds the No. 4 spot in the RPI that was initially released last week. The RPI will be used at the end of the regular season for playoff seeding purposes.

Below is a recap of all games played at the Payson tournament.

Game #1- Union-Win 9-1

In the first game of the day the Spartans faced the Union Cougars. Brooklynn Ekker went 2-3 as did Cambrie Jensen, both Jensen and Ekker registered one run and one RBI in the contest. Taija Olsen was 1-2 with two RBI’s and a pair of runs.

Emery put Union away with a five run fifth and coupled with Madisyn Childs six hit performance as she struck out seven, the Spartans coasted to the easy win.

Game #2- Payson- Win- 11-8

The game with the Payson Lions was a bit more competitive as they would jump out to an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the first, but by the end of the inning Emery would cut that lead in half. The Lions added another four runs in the third and in the bottom of the fourth the Lady Spartans would put up four runs of their own tying the game at eight.

Emery used a three run fifth to put distance between them and the Lions to take the victory.

Jensen was a single shy of hitting for the cycle as she collected four RBI’s. Ekker collected a pair of doubles and two RBI’s to go with it, and Brynlei Luke also earned a pair of RBI’s.

Aspen Taylor earned the win on the mound for Emery.

Manti- Loss- 9-1

The only loss of the day came at the hands of the Manti Templars who used an eight run sixth inning to take the 9-1 win over Emery.

Ekker, Jensen, Tylee Norton and Jalynn Fox each registered a hit in the contest, where the Spartan bat just went cold only managing to put up one run.

Childs and Jensen would team up on the mound combining for nine earned on 10 hits and striking out four.

Duchesne- Win- 5-4

In the final game on Saturday the Spartans faced the Duchesne Eagles.  This was another tight game but in the end the Lady Spartans finished on top 5-4.

Childs had another great outing getting the complete game win giving up four runs on six hits while she struck out five.

April 19- Canyon View- Win- 14-11

The Lady Spartans found themselves in Cedar City on Tuesday to face region competition in Canyon View. In their second meeting of the regular season, this was a game that was really up for grabs throughout. Tied at 10-10 in the sixth the two teams would end up going to extra innings to earn the 14-10 win.

Back in March when the Canyon View Falcons visited the Spartans, Emery would get the better of that match-up, 7-3.

The contest on Tuesday started out pretty innocently with everyone battling the elements. Cambrie Jensen got roughed up on the mound going 4.2 giving up ten earned runs on 14 hits striking out four. Madisyn Childs came in going 4.1 surrendering one hit and striking out three.

Offensively, both teams had their bats working early, with Canyon View putting up seven runs in the first four innings. Heading into the sixth down by three runs, Emery would tie up Canyon View, and then both teams would go quiet for the eighth, forcing extras.

In the top of the ninth Emery put up four innings taking the 14-10 lead. In the bottom half of the frame Canyon View could only come up with one run.

Brooklynn Ekker drove in four runs on 3-6 hitting and scoring a run. Brynlei Luke had a terrific game driving in three going 4-5 from the plate and scoring three runs . Tylee Norton and Tajia Olsen both went yard in the win for the Spartans.

The Spartans were back on the field on Wednesday to face the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs.

They will be back on the field at home next Thursday when they welcome North Sanpete game time is set for 3:30.

April 20- Gunnison Valley- Win- 15-11

The Lady Spartans played in their second game of a back-to-back on Wednesday, and just like the contest Tuesday with Canyon View, their game with the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs was another close one. Using a big seventh inning Emery took the win at home 15-11.

Brynlei Luke owned the day for Emery as a one-woman wrecking crew. Luke went 3-5 from the plate with two home runs driving in five RBI’s and scoring three.

Emery started out putting up three runs in the first two innings and had held Gunnison scoreless until the top of of the third when Gunnison Valley tied up the game at three.

After a quiet inning number four, the Bulldogs put up three more only to have it answered by the Spartans and three runs of their own. The back and forth continued into the seventh. Gunnison broke that tie with four runs in the top of the of the inning taking an 11-7 lead.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Emery needed five runs for the win, what followed was a huge offensive explosion for eight runs giving The Lady Spartans the victory.

Cambrie Jensen enjoyed her day at the plate going 2-5 with three RBI’s and added one run. Brooklyn Ekker got in on the fun offensively as well with a 4-5 day including three runs scored and two RBI’s.

Madisyn Childs got the start on the mound putting in 6.2 innings of work giving up seven earned on nine hits and also struck out seven. Jensen came in to close out the game striking out one.

The Spartans will now get a rest until next week. On Tuesday, they travel to Richfield to take on the Wildcats in a region match-up.  In late March, Emery took the first meeting 10-0.

Then next Thursday, they will welcome in North Sanpete for Senior Day. Game time is set for 3:30.

April 26- Richfield- Win- 16-5

With four games left on the schedule before the playoffs start, the Spartans traveled to Richfield on Tuesday to face the Wildcats. Coming off back-to-back wins Emery was looking to sweep the Wildcats in their season series and they did just that winning in five innings 16-5.

Aspen Taylor got the start and the win on the bump for the Spartans lasting 2.1 innings giving up five earned on seven hits and struck out two. Cambrie Jensen came in putting in 2.2 innings of work striking out five.

Emery got the party started in the second inning when Madisyn Childs would send one over the wall in center to put the first two runs on the board. When the inning came to an end Emery had jumped out to a 6-0 lead, then putting up another five runs in the third, the Spartans held a commanding 11-0 lead going in to the bottom of the inning.

Richfield came up in the bottom half of the inning and found their only offense putting up five runs and cutting the Spartan lead to 11-5.

By the top of the fourth The Spartans bats weren’t finished yet, tacking on five more runs and sealing the 16-5 win in five.

Broklynn Ekker and Childs shared the same line going 2-4 with two RBI’s and scoring two runs each. Brynlei Luke went 1-3 on the day scoring three runs.

Emery is currently 14-6 with a 5-2 record in Region 12, and the win over Richfield has moved them to No. 3 in the state RPI. Soon the rankings will go away only to resurface at the end of the regular season when the final rankings and playoff seeding will be released.

The Spartans will be back on the field on Thursday , when they welcome North Sanpete for “Senior Day” the final home game of the regular season. Game time is set for 3:30.

April 28- North Sanpete- Win- 1-0

Senior Madisyn Childs allowed just five hits across seven innings of shutout softball on Thursday in Castle Dale against North Sanpete. The Spartans were playing in their final regular season home contest so they took the time to honor the seniors on the team for Senior Day. After that it was all business as the Lady Spartans allowed no runs, and got one on the board for the 1-0 victory.

The Spartans will say goodbye to five seniors at the end of the season, Madisyn Childs, Cambrie Jensen , Taija Olsen, Brynlei Luke and Tylee Norton, but before then they’ve still got work to do.

This game was played as tightly as the final score indicated. Emery only scattered four hits throughout the game but made them count in the third inning, when Brooklynn Ekker came up hitting a triple to get on base, Aspen Taylor singled on a bunt scoring Ekker from third.

Emery tried to get something going again in the fourth with two on base but a double play on a bunt ended the possibility of any insurance runs. They were able to get another couple of base runners in the sixth, but left them stranded.

The way the defense was playing extra runs were not necessary, as North Sanpete was closed out three up and three down in the top of the seventh giving the Spartans the 1-0 win.

Before the RPI was removed the Emery Spartans had climbed to the No. 3 spot in 3A. With two more contests left we will wait and see where they will end up when the final rankings are released on May 6 when the state playoff bracket will be revealed.

Friday the Spartans will be back at it when they travel to Moab to take on Grand for the final time of the regular season. Back on March 24, these two teams met up with Emery coming out on top 15-4.

April 29- Grand- Loss- 7-1

The Lady Spartan softball squad traveled to Moab on Friday to take on the Grand County Red Devils. After going through a long season this would be their final region game of the year, and they had already handled the Red Devils in March. This game would end differently with the Lady Spartans unable to get their offense going and losing 7-1.

Grand would jump out putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning and then both sides went quiet offensively until the bottom of the fifth inning when Grand would add another four runs  and then pushed the score to 7-0 headed into the top of the seventh.

Emery would head into the inning scoring it’s only run of the contest on a wild pitch bringing Cambrie Jensen home.

Brooklynn Ekker would go 2-3 in the game with both Jensen and Jalynn Fox going 1-3 in the loss.

Madisyn Childs got the start for Emery on the mound putting in five innings of work giving up six earned on 11 hits and striking out eight while Jensen came in going one inning allowing one earned on two hits.

The Lady Spartans will be looking to May 6 when they Utah High School Activities Association will release the final RPI of the season along with the playoff bracket and then the next day the 3A State Championship Tournament begins at home sites. Starting on May 12 the venue will change locations to the Spanish Fork Softball Complex until a a new State Champ is crowned on May 14.

State Tournament-

May 7- Ogden- Win- 15-0

Taija Olsen was a single away from hitting for the cycle and Madisyn Childs allowed just one hit and no runs in the Emery Spartans rout of the Ogden Tigers on Saturday in Kamas for the opening round of the 3A State Softball Championships.

Olsen had a double, a triple and a homerun to go along with her six RBI’s in the win and on the mound Childs walked two and stuck out five, she also helped her cause on the offensive side with a double driving in two runs and scoring one of her own.

Olsen got things started when she sent a double to left field that scored Aspen Taylor and Tylee Norton in the bottom of the first. Next batter up was Childs who reached first on a dropped third strike that allowed Cambrie Jensen to come home, the first inning would end with Emery claiming a 3-0 lead.

The top of the second would end with Ogden stranding two batters on base as the Tiger’s Ellie Martinez would go down swinging for the third out.  With the score at 6-0 in the second, Olsen stepped up to the plate sending the first pitch over the left field wall driving in Norton and Jensen pushing the lead to 9-0. Jaylnn Fox would hit a single home run with two outs and the inning ended with the Lady Spartans adding seven more, pushing the score to 10-0.

Ogden was unable to put any runs on the board in the top of the third and Emery saw their opportunity to end the game in three innings and went to work. Brooklynn Ekker sent a single to center bringing Madi Bunnell home from second. An Aspen Taylor hit that turned into an error brought Ekker in to score. Two batters later with two outs, Olsen got up and with two strikes, sent a ground ball to center field which gave Norton the chance to score and allowed Olsen to leg out a triple. Childs was the next batter up and hit a double to left field as Olsen scored. The contest ended on a Fox single to center that brought Childs home.

May 12- South Summit- Loss- 12-11

The Emery Lady Spartans coming off their 15-0 opening round dismantling of Ogden last Saturday, traveled to Spanish Fork Thursday to face No. 4 South Summit. Emery jumped out to an 11-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, when South Summit found their offense putting up six runs in the inning and winning the game 12-11.

Emery entered the contest as the No. 5 seed. A win against South Summit could set up a contest with Carbon on Friday, and a loss would put them in the one loss bracket and a date with Union on Thursday.

The game started out rather quietly with South Summit putting up single runs in both the second and third innings. Both teams were quiet in the fourth and then Emery got it going in the fifth inning when Taija Olsen stepped up to the plate with two on and sent a single to second base, Olsen would advance to second on the throw and Aspen Taylor and Tylee Norton would both score. Madisyn Childs came up to the plate sending a line drive to left bringing home Morgan Luke and Olsen, the inning would come to an end when Madi Bunnell would collect a walk bringing in  Kali Jensen, putting the Lady Spartans up 5-2.

South Summit would take the lead 6-5  going into the top of the fifth, the Spartans would quickly go to work tying the game at six and kept pushing through the inning putting them back up 8-6. South Summit came out in the bottom of the inning going three-up and three-down, and making for a interesting seventh.

With one out and two strikes with two on, Cambrie Jensen sent one over the center field fence, bringing Taylor and Norton home and putting the Spartans up 11-6.

South Summit brought the offense in the bottom half of the inning tying the game up at 11 with a home run from the bat of Taya Rose. Mariah Bowen hit a ground ball getting to second base on an error and Rose, who came back in the game as a courtesy runner, scored giving South Summit the one run win, 12-11.

Childs started the game on the mound going 4.1 innings giving up six earned on seven hits striking out one. Cambrie Jensen put in two innings of work giving up five earned on six hits and striking out two, taking the loss.

Childs and Olsen collected three RBI’s and Cambrie Jensen had four RBI’s, going 2-4 from the plate and scoring a run.

May 12- Union- Loss- 4-1

Coming off the 12-11 loss earlier in the day to South Summit, the Lady Spartans fell into the one-loss bracket knowing that their next loss would be the end of the season. Union was not an unfamiliar foe, they played them at the Payson Tournament earlier in the year, winning the game 9-1. This time around Union was ready and came away with the 4-1 victory.

The Spartans only run came from the bat of Cambrie Jensen when she sent a solo home run over the center field wall in the bottom of the second. Jensen finished 1-3 from the plate. Brooklynn Ekker gathered another hit as she singled into left in the fifth and Madisyn Childs added another single.

Defensively, Emery committed three errors in the field. Childs was on the mound taking the loss giving up one earned run on eight hits and struck out three.

The Spartans went into the tournament in the No. 5 spot, in fact they were in the top five in 3A the whole season. Emery ended 16-9 and had a very respectable 5-3 record in Region 12. How good was the conference this season? Four of the top 10 schools in 3A called Region 12 home.
