The 2022 Castle Country Classic Livestock Show will be taking place on June 23 and June 24. Event Organizers have extended the entry registration to Wednesday, June 15 so there is still time to sign up. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Justin Thornley to discuss all the details.
“So we’re going to start on June 23, we’re going to weigh-in at 10:00 am, and then the actual show will start around 2:00 pm. But there are two different events that is basically going on, where we’ll judge a showmanship contest and then we’ll judge a market contest,” said Thornley. For the showmanship contest, the judges will be looking for how an individual has trained their animal and how they present their animal. As for the market contest, they are looking at the quality of the animal.
The livestock show is open to ages 9 through 18 years old. Event Organizers are doing a PeeWee Show for children ages 6 to 8 years old. “We’re also hosting a PeeWee Contest that’s new this year. So for the regular show you have to be a least in the third grade or just finish the third grade. For the PeeWee show this year we’re letting some kids that are turning six this year start with a little bit of a mini showmanship contest and the different events, and we have prizes for those kids too,” stated Thornley. The animals that can be shown for the PeeWee show are sheep, goats or hogs only. For the older kids they may show two animals per species.
There will not be an auction portion to this show, all animals will go home with their owners. “So the whole point of us creating this livestock show was to give kids an extra opportunity to show off their projects and learn a little bit more about showmanship and how to do that, so we have just prizes. Then most of the kids who are signed up for this show are also signed up for the Southeastern Utah Junior Livestock Show that is the second week of July this year, and they have an auction at the end of that show,” explained Thornley.
