The Helper American Legion baseball team got things started in the CJ Smuin Tournament on Wednesday night at Ernie Gardner Field in Helper.  Playing Alta in the nightcap of the opening day, Chet Anderson proved almost unhittable on the mound and Derek Robison collected four RBI’s on a 2-4 evening at the plate giving Helper the 11-1 win in six innings.

Helper entered their first home game of the season with a 3-1 record from last week’s RBI Tournament in Idaho and were looking to put more in the win column at the Smuin Tournament.

Helper scored two runs in the first and went on to put runs on the board in every inning. In the bottom of the first Quade Henrie got a pair of RBI’s off a single to second that would allow Rylan Hart and Wyatt Falk to score.

In the bottom of the fifth, Helper went to work. Connor Bradley scored on an Anderson sacrifice fly to center. Two pitches later Rylan Hart sent a line drive to center scoring Jacob Vasquez and then two batters later Robison would smack a double to left bringing home Hart, Falk and Braxtin Henrie.

Helper came up again in the bottom of the sixth, and with the score 10-1 and two outs Hart hit a grounder to third and reached first on an error which also brought Camden Wilson home pushing the score to 11-1 and ending the game in six innings.

Anderson had a day on the mound and at the plate, turning in a complete game, three hit performance giving up one run and striking out two. At the plate he went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Helper will take to the field again Thursday and Friday evenings at 8:00 at Gardner Field. Thursday they will face the team from St. George and Friday night they take on the team from Montrose Colorado. Saturday’s game has not been announced yet.
