dsc06713-2

The Lady Dinos softball club finished the 2022 campaign with a 22-7 overall record and went 6-1 in Region 12 to land them in first place in the region and in 3A. With one of the better regular seasons in recent memory, the Lady Dinos sat in the top spot in the RPI for most of the season, moving into the championships was a different story and a different season.

In the playoffs everyone starts with the same record, 0-0, and Carbon took down their first two opponents, Juan Diego and Grand County, but their final two South Summit and Canyon View proved problematic losing both games and going home after a second loss in the single loss bracket.

Listed below is a recap of the games from this season.

Opening Weekend tournament in St. George- March 10-12

Lady Dinos softball is starting out the season on the road in St. George, with a pair of games on Thursday and then beginning tournament play on Friday. In the two Thursday games, Carbon picked up wins against Pine View and Hurricane on Thursday and started out Friday picking up a win against Pleasant Grove. The Dinos have quite a test ahead in the coming days playing teams across different classifications.

The games on Thursday with Pine View (4A, Region 10) and Hurricane (4A Region 10), were really played like warm-up games for the weekend.

In the first game with Pine View, the Dinos claimed an 18-0 win in four innings, this is the second year in a row that Carbon has started the season against Pine View and the second win.

In game two they faced the Hurricane Tigers,  taking a 13-3 win in the contest. Last year they beat the Tigers, 9-4 in their opening weekend of play.

On Friday the Dinos would begin the Warm Up Elite Tournament in St. George. The first team they face was the Pleasant Grove Vikings. The Vikings play in the 6A ranks and last year ended the season 13-10,  defeating Roy in round one but falling to Clearfield in round two.

In their first game of the tournament, the Lady Dinos continued their roll taking a 13-8 win over the Vikings. They will continue the weekend playing two more games Friday and two games on Saturday. All four games are against some of the top teams in the state, starting with the defending 6A state champion, Riverton.

Riverton finished last season at 24-1 and a perfect 9-0 in region play. They will play each other at 6 p.m..

After that they will face the defending 3A champions Grantsville. Carbon didn’t see Grantsville in last year’s playoff, but did play them in the regular season winning in extra innings 4-3. They meet up at 8 p.m..

They wrap up the weekend tomorrow taking on Cyprus another 6A team at noon, then they will face Grand at 2 p.m..

Mar. 11- Riverton- Loss- 11-0

In talking to some of the players on this year’s team, quite a few were looking forward to taking on Riverton, the 6A defending champs. Riverton finished last season 24-1 and had nine players return to this years squad.

Riverton would jump on the Dinos early, scoring four runs in the first and end the game in four innings 11-0.

Haven Byerly got the start going 3 2/3 innings, giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on seven hits and struck out 7. Kylan Sorenson came in to go 1/3, striking out 1.

Gia Bruno went 2-2 and Sorenson went 1-1, collecting the only hits for the Dinos.

Mar. 11- Grantsville- Win- 13-2

The nightcap game for the Lady Dinos was a meeting with the 3A defending champion Grantsville Cowboys. The Cowboys went 19-6 and last season beating Manti in the championship game. Carbon and Grantsville locked up last season with the Dinos coming out on top 4-3 in extra innings.

The Dinos came out swinging putting up six runs in the first and allowed the Cowboys just two runs in the third.

In the fourth the Dinos would add six more runs to the score board, taking the win in four, 13-2.

Carbon found offense in this one with Mollie Horsley going 2-3 with three RBI’s. Tenley Madsen also had three RBI’s going 1-4 from the plate. Haven Byerly and Reese Ardohain each had two RBI’s as well.

On the mound Kylan Sorenson earned the complete game victory allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and collected three strikeouts.

Mar. 12- Cyprus- Loss- 6-0

At noon on Sunday the Dinos headed back to the field to face the Cyprus Pirates. Cyprus had a 17-10 record last season losing to Layton in the second round. Cyprus plays in the 6A class.

Cyprus put Kenley Henson on the mound against Carbon and she allowed just two hits and struck out 10 in this dominate win.

Bruno and Horsley would both go 1-3 collecting the only hits for the Dinos.

Byerly went two innings giving up three earned on one hit and struck out two. Madsen would enter the game going four and surrendering three runs two earned on five hits and struck out three.

Mar. 12- Grand- Win 11-1

The weekend ended with the  Dinos facing Grand County. Last season these two teams faced each other four times splitting the season series. The last win went to Carbon and came in the form of an elimination game in the state playoffs 7-6.

This game Carbon wouldn’t mess around taking the win in four innings, 11-1.

Offensively, Byerly went 2-3 with three RBI’s and Bruno would go 2-3 with two RBI’s, as the Dinos scattered nine hits across four innings. Makayla Scovill added three runs, going 2-2 from the plate.

Sorenson collected another complete game giving up one earned run on five hits, striking out three.

March 15- Win- Juan Diego- 17-1

The Lady Dinos put on an offensive clinic for the crowd Tuesday afternoon in their first home game of the season as they dispatched the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle 17-1 in three innings. Carbon collected 18 hits as their offense came alive and defensively only surrendered one.

The Dinos returned home after a weekend in St. George at the Warm Up Elite Tournament where they collected wins against Pleasant Grove , Grantsville and Grand.

Gia Bruno and Stevie Oman both put three RBI’s on the board with Bruno putting two homeruns in her stat column and Oman and Tenley Madsen added one as well.  The entire team was firing on all cylinders as they scored all 17 runs in the first inning.

Seven Lady Dinos went 2-2 in the game including Bruno and Oman, Haven Byerly. Maddix Whiteside, Mollie Horsley, Brielle Sandoval and Makaya Scovill all connected in both at bats in really just two innings of work for the Dino offense.

Danica Adams and Madsen shared pitching duties putting together a gem. Adams gave up just one hit while striking out four and Madsen came in and allowed no hits and two strikeouts, the two combined for just 50 pitches in the victory.

Carbon sits at 6-2 and won’t really have the opportunity to enjoy the win as this was the first of three games this week.

March 16- Uintah- Win 5-3

Carbon standout pitcher Haven Byerly fanned 16 batters and struck out the side four times in a complete game effort as the Lady Dinos earned a hard fought 5-3 win over the Uintah Utes on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Entering Wednesday’s tilt winners of their last two outings, the Carbon offense provided instant run support for Byerly as they posted four runs in the opening inning. Uintah slowly chipped away at the Carbon advantage, but never captured the lead.

Byerly’s dominance helped the Lady Dinos maneuver through a dry spell offensively as the team was shutout for five innings. Limiting the Utes to just four hits, opportunities came at a premium for the opposing team.

Stevie Oman continued to find success at the plate as she finished 1-3 with a two RBI. Tenley Madsen also contributed two RBI as she finished 1-2. Gia Bruno was the lone Carbon player to record multiple hits with two as the team finished with seven overall.

Carbon drew first blood as Oman laced a two RBI single into left field with two outs in the first inning. The two-out rally continued at the next at bat as Madsen singled to center to put two more runs on the board.

Uintah finally erased the zero on the scoreboard as they plated their first run of the game in the third inning. Two more runs in the fifth frame brought the Utes within one run. The score remained 4-3 entering the seventh.

Following two walks to start the top of the seventh, Bruno knocked a single to center field to load the bases. Makayla Scovill grounded into a fielders choice, which allowed Adri Abeyta to cross home plate, giving Carbon an insurance run entering the the bottom of the final inning.

With two outs and the winning run at the plate Byerly was able to complete the seven inning effort as the third out came as a pop out to left field.

March 18- Grantsville- Loss- 14-2

The Dinos found themselves down early on Friday against the defending state champion Grantsville Cowboys, who put up nine runs in the first inning. Unable to awaken their offense, Carbon fell at home 14-2.

The Lady Dinos had just beaten Grantsville on Mar. 11 at the tournament in St. George, on Friday and were looking forward to facing them again on the field at the Carbon County Fairgrounds, the results we’re almost identical with the exception of the winner.

Being the visitors, Grantsville put points up first, scoring nine in the top the the inning and then would use their defense to hold Carbon scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when they scored one and then again in the bottom of the fifth scoring another run, but that was all the scoring they could muster.

Reece Ardohain and Makayla Scovill were both able to put RBI’s on the board for the Dinos as Carbon was held to just two runs across six innings, Carbon also moves their season record to 7-3. Pitcher Kylan Sorneson was given the loss.

Up next for Carbon is another team they have been looking forward to taking on since last season’s loss in the state tournament, the Manti Templars.

Last year, these two teams faced each other in the semi-finals of the playoffs and after a hard fought battle the Templars knocked the Dinos out of contention 8-7 in nine innings. Manti would move on to lose in the next round to Grantsville.

March 22- Manti- Win- 8-3

Last May in the 3A state playoffs, the Dinos lost to the Manti Templars 8-7 in extra innings, and since then Carbon has been waiting.  Tuesday was the day and the Dinos were ready, jumping on the Templars in the first and this time came out on top by a score of 8-3.

In talking with the players early in the season, next to Grantsville, the game with Manti was the next one they were getting ready for, saying, “We owe them.”

Carbon didn’t waste time, putting five runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, and keeping the Templars scoreless for the first two innings while building the lead. Haven Byerly earned the win on the mound getting the complete game win, giving up three earned runs on five hits while striking out nine.

Offensively, Gia Bruno went 3-4 for the Dinos and Gracie Vasquez collected three RBI’s. Byerly helping her own cause, added two RBI’s along with three other Carbon players who added an RBI each.

The Lady Dinos sit at 8-3 overall with wins over teams out of their classification like Pleasant Grove, Hurricane and Pine View and with wins on the schedule against Grantsville and now Manti, they will head into the region part of the calendar starting Friday against the Richfield Wildcats.

Last season the Wildcats went 7-22 losing in the one loss bracket to Delta. Richfield has seven players returning from last season and second year coach Janell Johansen is excited about the contributors that will be coming back.

March 25- Richfield- Win- 21-1

Tenley Madsen was a force to be reckoned with on Friday when Carbon traveled to Richfield to face the Wildcats. The Dinos put up 14 runs in the top of the first as Madsen pitched a one-hitter giving up one run and striking out six, in the Dinos 21-1 victory in three innings.

Madsen also helped herself on the offensive side going 3-4 including one home run and six RBI’s. This was Carbon’s fifth win in their last six games moving their overall record to 9-3 and a 1-0 region mark.

Carbon started off with a huge first inning putting up 14 runs. Throughout the game Carbon collected 21 hits but more importantly held the Wildcats to just one run on one hit.

After the offensive explosion in the first the Dinos dialed it back a bit, scoring just three in the second and then another four in the third. Carbon got contributions from Stevie Oman who went 2-3 with three RBI’s. Reese Ardohain went 2-4 while driving in three and Makayla Scovill had a 2-2 day and also brought home three. It was a great team victory for the Dinos as they also earned their first region win.

Carbon has three games on the schedule this week with Grand, Cedar Valley and Emery.

First up will be a home game with Grand on Tuesday.  this will be the first meeting between these two in region play this season. They did meet earlier in the season during tournament play with Carbon taking the 11-1 win.

Wednesday they will head to Eagle Mountain to face Cedar Valley.  The Aviators moved up from 4A this year to 5A and currently hold a 6-3 record.

March 30- Cedar Valley- Win 14-1

Lady Dinos softball found themselves on the road Wednesday in Eagle Mountain to face the Cedar Valley Aviators. Carbon used a big fourth inning to put pressure on the Aviators, who couldn’t come back from the deficit and Carbon came home with a 14-1 victory in six innings.

Cedar Valley is the seventh team Carbon has faced this season from an upper classification and the Dinos have amassed a 5-2 record in those games pushing their overall mark to 10-3.

The Dinos started the game by putting up two runs in each of the first two innings and allowed the only Aviator run in the bottom of the first. Carbon also helped their cause by frustrating Cedar Valley into seven errors in the contest.

In the fourth, Carbon had their biggest offensive output of the game scoring six runs, to go up 10-1.  Cedar Valley would hold the Dinos scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Dinos put up four more, putting the game out of reach.

Haven Byerly earned the win on the mound going four, giving up one run while striking out five. Tenley Madsen came in giving up just one hit and fanning one batter.

Mollie Horsley, Maddix Whiteside and Madsen had a productive outing for the Dinos, with Horsley scoring three times. Madsen collected three RBI’s and Whiteside two in the Carbon win.

Up next for the Dinos is a road meeting with the Emery Spartans on Friday.

Carbon got started in the first inning putting 10 runs up on the board. Makayla Scovill added four RBI’s in the contest. Maddix Whiteside and Gabrielle Vasquez each had three RBI’s in the huge win for the Dinos.

Emery just couldn’t get anything started on the offensive side, unable to find a hit in the contest with Carbon.

On the defensive side, it didn’t get much easier as the Spartans used two pitchers. Madisyn Childs took the loss going three innings giving up 14 runs (13 earned)  on 13 hits. Aspen Taylor came in going one inning giving up two hits and one earned.

Earlier in the day on Friday, the Utah High School Activities Association released it;s initial RPI  in which the Dinos landed in the top spot and the Spartans were in the No. 3 spot.

April 14- North Sanpete- Win- 7-4

The Lady Dinos are facing Emery for the final time this regular season on Friday, but Thursday they made the trip over the mountain to Mount Pleasant to face the North Sanpete Hawks. Neither team got anything going offensively until the fourth inning, but in the end it was Carbon that walked away with the 7-4 win.

Tenley Madsen and Haven Byerly took care of the pitching duties for the Dinos with Madsen putting in five innings of work giving up two earned on five hits and Byerly went the final two giving up two runs as well.

Both Carbon and North Sanpete couldn’t find their offense early on, the Dinos put the first run on the board in the top of the fourth, however the Hawks would come back and tie-up the score.

The Lady Dinos have been protecting the No.1 ranking in 3A this season and in their last five games they have out scored their opponents 65-9. In their game on Friday against the Lady Spartans, Carbon started fast and finished with a 10-5 win moving to 13-3 this season and 3-0 in Region 12 play.

The Dinos are now 16-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Region 12 play and have held on to the No.1 spot in the 3A RPI since it was released by the Utah High School Activities Association on April 1.

Carbon has had a very busy week with games so far against Grand, Juab and Richfield all of which have been wins and they have also all been on their home field. With six games remaining on the schedule and half of them with region competition Carbon will be looking to finish out the regular season strong and keep the No. 1 ranking headed into the state tournament that starts on May 7 at pod home sites, the final rounds will be played at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex beginning on May 12.

April 21- Grand- Loss- 4-2

The Carbon Dinos softball team found themselves in unfamiliar territory on Thursday in Moab when they faced the Grand County Red Devils, on the wrong end of a 4-2 score.

The Lady Dinos lost for the first time since March 18, when Grantsville handed them a 14-2 loss in Price. Carbon was riding high on a nine game winning streak and had just beaten the Red Devils on Monday 17-1 in four innings.

Grand put up the first runs in the game putting up three in the first two innings. Carbon would put their only runs on the board in the fourth. Gabrielle Vasquez had one hit, one run and one RBI in the inning and Stevie Oman added the other. Tenley Madsen and Reese Ardohain also collected hits in the loss.

Madsen was on the mound for the Dinos taking the loss going six, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out six.

The Lady Dinos sit at 16-4 with a 5-1 region record. Carbon still sits atop the 3A RPI rankings compiled by the Utah High School Activities Association, although the gap between them and No.2 Grantsville is closing with Carbon’s RPI number sitting at 0.729082 and Grantsville close behind at 0.701517.

With five games left on the schedule,  a big test will start off next week for the Lady Dinos when they travel to Kamas on Monday to face the No.3 ranked South Summit Wildcats.

April 25- South Summit- Win- 11-6

The Lady Dinos have sat atop the RPI since April 1 when the Utah High School Activities Association released their initial rankings. On Monday they faced a test against the South Summit Wildcats, the No. 3 team in 3A. Tied at 2-2 after the seventh, Carbon got their bats going, putting up nine runs with three of them coming from Stevie Oman’s three run shot, then holding on in the bottom of the inning to win 11-6.

Since the initial release of the rankings Carbon has gone 7-1 with their lone loss coming at the hands of Grand on April 21, the loss also marked the only region loss on the Dinos schedule.

Monday’s outing was a defensive duel with Carbon putting up a single run in the second inning. In the third South Summit put two runs on the board taking a lead that would only last till the top of the fifth when the Dinos would tie it up once again.

The eighth inning was exciting from beginning to end with the Lady Dinos finding a way to put nine runs on the score board. It was almost like an assembly line with Brielle Sandoval getting a two-run double adding to the onslaught and Oman’s home run capping off the inning. Haven Byerly finished off her day on the mound in the bottom of the eighth, closing out the Wildcats with the complete game win, giving up two earned on five hits while striking out 12.

Tenley Madsen went 2-5 from the plate collecting a couple of RBI’s. Maddix Whiteside had a double, going 3-4 and driving in a run and Makayla Scovill was 3-5 and had an RBI in the big win for the Dinos.

April 27- Providence Hall- Win- 17-2

The Lady Dinos enter the last two weeks of the season still holding the No.1 ranking in the 3A RPI. Coming off a big road win in Kamas over South Summit on Monday, Carbon welcomed the Providence Hall Patriots to Price Wednesday earning the 17-2 win in four innings.

Carbon had been cruising along on a nine game winning streak until they ran into the Grand County Red Devils last Thursday, the win over South Summit hopefully gave them the spark they need to go into the post-season.

The Patriots would put two runs on the board in the top of the first and that would be all that Tenley Madsen on the mound for Carbon, plus the stingy Dino defense would give them. Madsen got the complete game win, giving up two earned on five hits striking out one.

The rest of the game it was all about the Dinos on the base paths. In the bottom of the first inning Carbon would put four runs on the board starting when Makayla Scovill would send a  single to left that brought home Brielle Sandoval.

The Carbon bats would go silent until the bottom of the third inning when a Stevie Oman sacrifice fly to center brought Scovill home increasing the Dino lead to 5-0.

It was the bottom of the fourth inning when the Carbon bats came to life putting up 12 runs. Picking up single runs here and there, then the Lady Dinos would start scoring in bunches, starting when Madsen singled to left bringing Sandoval home. Gianna Bruno and Scovill would both score on errors. Gabrielle Vasquez came up after two batters and a pitching change, and sent a double to left field which brought home Oman and Haven Byerly. Bruno came up again later in the inning hitting a single to left field, scoring Vasquez and Mollie Horsley putting the score at 17-2, ending the game in four innings without Carbon getting a single out in the fourth.

Oman had a game, going 2-2 with three RBI’s and scored two runs. Bruno ended the day 1-2 with a pair of RBI’s and two runs scored, and Madsen helped her own cause, 1-3 with a run scored and a couple of RBI’s.

The Dinos are now 18-4 over all and 5-1 in Region 12 play and have three games remaining on their schedule two of which are region contests against Canyon View.

April 28- Canyon View- Loss- 11-5

With just a few games left on the schedule, the Lady Dinos traveled to Cedar City to face the Canyon View Falcons in a region contest. Carbon uncharacteristically committed four errors in the game and struggled creating enough offense to overcome the Falcons, losing 11-5.

The Dinos headed to Cedar knowing that they had just three games left on their regular season schedule, two games with Canyon View and a meeting with Union sandwiched in between.  The regular season is set to end on May 5 for 3A.

The Dinos were the first team on the board putting up their first run in the top of the third when Makayla Scovill came up with the bases loaded and one out sending a single to center field bringing home Gianna Bruno. In the top of the fourth they had another opportunity, when Gabrielle Vasquez hit a single to left that allowed Haven Byerly and Brielle Sandoval to score, making it 3-0 Dinos headed to the bottom of the fourth. Canyon View came out in the bottom half of the inning taking the lead back 4-3.

The Dinos would score single runs in both the fifth and sixth inning, but every time Carbon got within striking distance the Falcons would put more runs on the board.

The Carbon defense had a rough outing giving up three runs on four errors as well as surrendering three home runs. Byerly got the start on the mound going 5.2 innings giving up 10 runs (five earned) on four hits while striking out 11. Kylan Sorenson finished out the contest giving up one run and one hit.

Offensively, Vasquez was 1-4 with a pair of RBI’s. Tenley Madsen went 1-3 with a home run and an RBI and Scovill and Stevie Oman both collected RBI’s in the loss.

Before the game the Dinos were at No.1 in the RPI rankings which have now been removed. They will be released again on May 6 when the state playoff bracket is revealed.

May 3- Union- Win- 9-3

The Lady Dinos are wrapping up their regular season this week with a pair of home games the first of which was against the Union Cougars on Tuesday. The state playoffs start this Saturday and every win helps. Tenley Madsen got the complete game win giving up two earned on eight hits striking out seven and closing the door on Union 9-3.

Brielle Sandoval got things going for the Dinos in the bottom of the second with a grounder to right field bringing home Stevie Oman and Haven Byerly, Sandoval ended the day 2-4 with two RBI’s.

Union and Carbon would trade runs in the third making the score 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth Mollie Horsley got the scoring started with a single to right that drove in Byerly, Horsley would collect another RBI in the game and score a run. Gabrielle Vasquez singled to center allowing Reese Ardohain to cross the plate to score. Makayla Scovill had a day going 4-4, scoring a run and collecting one RBI when she doubled to left driving in Horsley to make the score 6-1.

Carbon added another run off the bat of Horsley in the fifth and then another pair of runs in the sixth when Byerly sent one to center that let both Gianna Bruno and Scovill put runs up making the score 9-1 headed to the top of the seventh. Union could only add a pair of runs on a pair of doubles before the Dinos would close them out for the win.

The Lady Dinos have one more game on the regular season schedule and it doesn’t get much bigger, a contest with the Canyon View Falcons for the region title.  Carbon sits at 19-5 with a 5-2 record, a win would give them the region title and then the wait for Friday begins.

May 4- Canyon View- Win 5-4

The Lady Dinos have played a very impressive regular season, and they were looking to end on a winning note on Wednesday when Canton View came to Price. In their first meeting against the Falcons, Carbon struggled finding offense in Cedar City losing 11-5. This time around on the Dinos home field, on Senior Day and with a region title in the balance Carbon would fight their way to a 5-4 win, taking the Region 12 crown and ending the regular season with a win headed to the playoffs.

This game started out very differently than it finished with Canyon View jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. In the bottom of the inning Mollie Horsley sent a single to right field bringing home Reese Ardohain, two batters later Gianna Bruno stepped up to the plate and on the first swing of the bat she sent one deep over the left field wall for a two-run home run clearing the bases and tying the score at three. Bruno would end the contest with two RBI’s scoring two runs on a 1-3 performance at the plate.

Both the Dinos and the Falcons would trade runs in the fifth inning, tying things back up at four. It was the bottom of the sixth when Makayla Scovill sent a ground ball to short bringing home Gabrielle Vasquez, putting the Dinos up by one. Canyon View had a chance in the top of the seventh, but with one on Haven Byerly would get Canyon View’s Gracie Burt swinging, ending the game and handing Carbon the region crown.

Byerly earned the complete game win giving up four earned on four hits while striking out 10. Byerly has had a dominant season on the mound ranking at No. 7 in strikeouts in the state across all classes.

Scovill ended the game with a pair of hits and an RBI. Horsley collected two hits adding an RBI and scoring a run.

2022 3A State Softball Championships

May 9- Juan Diego- Win- 25-0

Carbon softball began their run towards a state title on Saturday when they welcomed the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle to Price for the opening round of the 3A State Softball Championships.  This was the second time these two had met up this season and much like the first Carbon took care of business in three innings 25-0.

Behind Tenley Madsen and Danica Adams on the mound, who combined for the one hit shutout while striking out seven on the defensive side and Gianna Bruno who ended the day 1-2 with a grand slam home run, five RBI’s and scoring a run herself that was just part of the potent Dino offense.

Going back to March, when the Dinos faced Juan Diego for the first time this season, coincidentally the game also ended in three innings as Carbon came away with the 17-0 victory.

Makayla Scovill who had a day, going 3-3 with four RBI’s, three hits and three runs, got things going for the Dinos with a double to center which led to Mollie Horsley and Gabrielle Vasquez coming home. With the score 7-0 Bruno stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and sent one over the wall in left field, driving in Brielle Sandoval, Horsley and Vasquez, moving the score to 11-0. The scoring for the first inning ended when Haven Byerly would ground out to the pitcher bringing home Adri Abeyta and pushing the score to 13-0 at the end of one.

After holding Juan Diego scoreless in the top of the second inning, Carbon would get started when Bruno was intentionally walked bringing in Sandoval. Scovill was the next batter up and her single to center drove home Horsley and Vasquez. Madsen came to the plate next, with a line drive to left and after one of Juan Diego’s eight errors, Madsen found herself on second and Scovill would score.  With two out, Annie McGinnis entered the game for Bruno and wasted no time sending a double to center field that allowed Reese Ardohain and Sandoval to score making it 22-0. Another error brought in Gracee Vasquez and McGinnis. Abeyta put the final run on the board off of a Jenna Richards single. Carbon held Juan Diego to three-up and three-down in the third ending the game 25-0.

Up next for the Dinos is a meeting with Region 12 foe Grand at 10:00 in Spanish Fork on Thursday.  This will actually be the fourth time these two teams have faced each other this season. The first meeting was at a tournament in St. George and the Dinos came away with an 11-1 win. In their first region meeting on April 18, the Lady Dinos claimed a 17-1 win and then just two days later Grand would get the better of Carbon 4-2.

May 12- Grand- Win- 1-0

Haven Byerly continued her dominance on the mound fanning 14 batters in The Dinos win over Grand on Thursday punching their ticket to the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championships. This was a defensive battle but in the end Carbon came out on top 1-0.

The game was a story of the two pitchers. Byerly got the start and complete game win, allowing just one hit walking three. For Grand it was Paige Shumway who had just as impressive a stat line surrendering three hits one earned run and struck out 15.

The Dinos were able to put up their only run in the bottom of the sixth, when Tenley Madsen connected on a fly ball to right, an error allowed Madsen to advance to second and Brielle Sandoval scored. Sandoval, Madsen and Reese Ardohain were the only Dinos to collect a hit against Shumway, on a day in which she was almost unhittable.

May-13- South Summit- Loss- 4-2 & Canyon View- Loss 13-3

Carbon softball started the 3A playoffs last Saturday in Price, making their way through the opening round starting with Juan Diego. On Friday, they met South Summit on the field at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex. South Summit had sent Emery to the one-loss bracket on Thursday and unfortunately for the Dinos they would fall to the Wildcats 4-2, meaning the Dinos would play one more game on Friday against Region 12 member Canyon View. Carbon went on to lose that game 13-3 ending the season.

Carbon’s day started at 10:00 when they took the field to face South Summit. They had taken on The Wildcats earlier in the season on their home field taking a 9-1 win.

South Summit put runs up on the board first scoring three in the top of the third inning. They led 4-0 when the Dino’s came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth and Gabrielle Vasquez came up to the plate sending a line drive to center registering a double and driving Jenna Richards home, Vasquez would end the game going 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Mollie Horsley came to the plate next sending a single to left field bringing in Vasquez.

Haven Byerly got the start on the mound going seven giving up three earned on three hits, striking out three but uncharacteristically walking seven. With the loss Carbon fell to the one-loss bracket and would turn around and have to face Canyon View Friday afternoon.

The Dinos had a tough time generating any offense against the Canyon View Falcons, collecting only five hits for the second consecutive game.

Canyon View put up four runs when Tenley Madsen came to the plate hitting a fly ball  bringing home Brielle Sandoval and Adri Abeyta. Later in the inning Stevie Oman sent a sacrafice fly to left bringing in Makayla Scovill, cutting the Canyon View lead to 4-3 and that would be as close as the Dinos would get.

In the fourth and fifth innings the Falcons put up nine runs end the game in five and Carbon’s season.

Madsen collected two RBI’s on a 1-3 day at the plate. Oman had the other RBI on a 1-1 day.

Byerly got the start and the loss giving up 10 earned on seven hits striking out four. Madsen came in and put in one inning of work with two earned on three hits.

The Lady Dinos season ends with a 22-7 record.
